Why don't people travel to the DTE show in Detroit?

I've always wondered this....

I'm from Clarkston which is where the Detroit DMB show is every year. I obviously never miss it and also travel to all the other shows around the area - Deer Creek, Chicago, Blossom Center, Riverbend, Alpine etc. However, when I read the DTE thread every year there's not much activity and almost zero people talking about how they're coming in from out of town for the show. Why is that? Is it because Detroit is a toilet? People don't like the venue? The lack of things to do and/or lack of hotels near the venue?

Because it's not Alpine in Elkhorn/East Troy.
Because it's not SPAC in Saratoga Springs.
Because it's not the Gorge in George.
Because it's not Red Rocks in Golden.

I actually really like that venue. Although for me it is about 3+ hours away. For a mid week show that is a bit far.

    This.

There is literally nothing in that equation that would make me travel to that show.

The venue itself would have to be one that was so amazing that it made Gorge look like, well, Detroit.

I love Pine Knob, my wife and I are driving up there from Cleveland today. Counting tonight we have seen 6 out of the last 7 shows there, and last year I had my 100th show there. I think it is a good venue, my only complaint is that the general concourse areas are a little tight but overall we love seeing shows there.

    yea, it's in clarkston

people don't go because the northeast and midwest are cluttered with better venues within driving distance (in better cities(i know, that's subjective, but still))

this is the truth, i feel

no I can't. I've hit 6 shows in 4 weeks. The furthest I had to drive was 3 hours. All shows were weekend, except JB which I happened to have the following day off and friends who were going already. I have another 4 planned, which require the use of an airplane. I do not have the time or money to add a random one night stand which is, by all accounts, a subpar venue in (near, whatever) one of the least safe and least desirable cities in the nation. Going to Hartford is a big enough risk, thanks. Detroit seems to be just a little further.

    looks like i must explain

point: don't confuse detroit and clarkston. detroit is a dump. pine knob is a great venue.

being a mid-week show and a far drive for non-michigan folks are valid

Re: Why don't people travel to the DTE show in Detroit?

i'm not doubting that pine knob is a good venue, i'm saying it's hard to attract out-of-towners when pine knob is so close to alpine (no need to explain this one), blossom (beautiful venue), starlake (usually a 2 nighter), riverbend (cincy is nicer than detroit, which means people will have more options of things to do while in town for the show, sight seeing etc), Deer Creek (2 nighter, and from what i hear, also gorgeous) and darien (usually around the 4th of july weekend)

i think we all realize that clarkston is not detroit, just like burgettstown isn't pittsburgh, but the fact that the closest major city is a dumb probably deters the out of towners whereas the appeal of a city like cincy, pittsburgh, indy, buffalo and the scenery of alpine & blossom will give people extra incentive to travel to that venue

    Hi Scott

We travel to Pine Knob (from Chicago) despite it being midweek (and always a pain with husbands work) but that's only because my inlaws live there, my husband grew up nearby, and even worked at DTE in high school and college.

That being said its a one night show midweek at a so-so venue.

Clarkston is actually really nice and as Scott said in an affluent area. Detroit is a world away.

Hey. I'm not defending the OP at all, but 'Detroit being a shit hole' should not be on the list of reasons to not go. I was super jealous pre show getting texts and seeing Facebook of everyone there, not so much after seeing the set.

Last night was my first time there... I thought the venue was one of the nicest I've ever been to. I know it's midweek and a 1 nighter, but for people looking to make a road trip or just go to a different place, you will deff love this venue. There are so many venues that are just shitty and nothing to remember.... This place will always be in my top I think just the way it wa set up. Waterfalls everywhere, beautiful landscape, and the acousitcs were phenominal.

The sets are usually Lame, most people go to the show to talk, who the heck would travel 2+ hours just to enter Michigan, rarely a close follow up show, generally follows Alpine, always a mid-week show which leads to limited tailgating prior to the show, etc

Sure it should, if it's the closest major city and you'd be travelling from out of state. When I take a trip out of Texas for a show, I'd like to do something other than the show. Sitting around in a nice suburb isn't going to cut it.

So while Mansfield isn't in Boston, and Mountain View isn't in San Francisco, I would (and have) take trips to those venues, mostly just to visit those cities.

This isn't uncommon. As someone who follows a bunch of these bands, Michigan shows are often skipped by those on tour. Whether it's Phish, Further, SCI or whoever else. Guess people just don't want to make the drive or maybe it's that Pine Knob isn't anywhere close to a major city where folks can hang out. Of course Blossom and few others are the same way but they're more "on the way" to other shows. You see it for West-Coast swings where folks skip shows in those NW states like Utah.

always a mid-week show which leads to limited tailgating prior to the show, etc

    A myth. There's plenty.

This is exactly right. I will only travel to a show if there is also something else to do. I can drive around and see Anytown USA right where I live, and I'm way past the "I'm going to tailgate for 48 hours straight, and then not remember the show" stage.

DTE is my "home" venue. But I'm about to give up on it. There are too many people at the shows just there to socialize, people talking continuously through some of the better songs, it being mid week, the so-so sets, the lack of energy (IMO, I know it all depends on where you're at and who you're by), all of it. I'll just put my money into the bigger and better two night stands.
