That's a bummer, but I like Mayer and Bobby. They seem to gel. Would rather have Phil than another bassist.

Replaced with Gordo from what I've heard

Saw Mayer open for Phil years ago at the Warfield. I was not at all impressed. Didn't seem to read his audience well. Real lack of show flow. Perhaps he's gotten better? Can't say I'd pay money to see him. Might go out of curiosity if a free pass materialized.

How long ago? He was not the same guitarist/person even 5 years ago. He's finally grown up and playing even more different types of music.

It was a New Years run in 2005. I'm glad he's grown. I probably would not seek him out but I'll listen with an open mind. If he's going to be playing with Weir it will be easy for me to pick up a show at the Sweetwater.

Saw Phil and Stu Allen at TXR last night. Last minute ticket. Jay and Phil talked 1974 before the show and they played a show from Montana 1974. First set was long and varied. Second set ripped.

Anyone catch Dear Jerry last night? Buddy Miller slayed Deal, Eric Church did a pretty cool Tennessee Jed, and Bobby sounded STRONG on Days Between.

Just saw where my local theatre is broadcasting all 3 Fare Thee Well shows for a really decent price. Too bad my finance's birthday that weekend and no way I can get away to see them.

Today is last day to pre-order all 5 webcasts for only $79.95 rather than a lot more separately:

    http://www.mlb.com/concert/dead50/

why it's hosted on MLB.com I have no idea

Can't believe they didn't find time for Railroad Earth last night. That's a bummer. And Phil not sitting in with the other 3 is kinda annoying.

Great article on Bobby in WSJ too. I'm more of a Phil guy, but Bobby is seeming way less douchey these last couple of years.

I'm actually really interested in the smaller (4 disc) set that has one song from each year. It will be a lot of fun to hear the growth from each year kind of summarized by the folks who know the bend better than almost anybody else.

The Weir doc is really great. I like how he talked about the Deadheads and their traveling to see them. "If you're a college kid following us for the summer that's cool. But if you're a guy selling drugs to get to the next show, I have no sympathy for you."

It was a very interesting take on Deadheads. I wasn't really expecting him to comment the way he did. He almost made it sound like he thought they were all silly.

So, I just threw on 5/3/72. Admittedly, I'm not a huge Dead fan but I got their Live release on vinyl on RSD last year. Is this a good place to start or am I doing it all wrong?

You're doing it right. I think you can start anywhere with the Dead honestly (besides mid 90's IMO)

Personally, late 70s (77 & 78) are my favorite Dead. Anything in the 60s is going to be really psychedelic and out there so it won't be the most musically inviting. 80s Dead is like most other 80s music but better and 90s Dead isn't really worth it until you get through all the other stuff. Late 80s and 90s Dead are my least favorite by a good shot.

You can always start with the classic Cornell '77 show if you need a starting point and just weed around from there. You won't find too much 70s Dead that isn't enjoyable.

This is what I'm looking for, thanks.

Psychadelic and out there is very much my cup of tea.
