Seriously, you have to get Chicago's for pizza. I also love Dagostinos thin crust. Portillos is a must. Also, if you like char hot dogs and burgers, the weiner circle in lincoln park is a must! Simply amazing!
Other restaurants to consider:

RPM
Girl and the Goat
Publican
Mercadito

excellent advice here about Portillos. deep dish pizza is a block of cheese on a thick crust. I mean its ok, but its a block of cheese no matter where you go. Portillos is the real deal. Beef sandwich, ribs or chicken sandwich, cheese fries, and milk shake, all must haves...but like you said literally the entire menu is good, and you'll spend like 10 bucks.
For your trendy list, let me say Tavernita is an awful waste of time. I hated the food, just hated it. The atmosphere is cool, but for food, go elsewhere. GATG is just impossible to get into, I still haven't. RPM is awesome Italian, run by the E! couple Bill and Guliana (sp). Mastros is in the running for best and most expensive steakhouse. Publican is a pig lovers dream. Mercadito blasts techno music for Sunday brunch and guys wear sunglasses inside. But the food is pretty good.
