I love Pequod's (the carmelized cheese crust is awesome), however I wouldn't consider it to be "true" Chicago pizza a la Gino's, Giordano's, etc...

Everyone and their mother will tell you which of the places is the "best" and that the rest "suck", but it's really all just personal preference. Personally I like Gino's East the best, but it's really hard to go wrong with any of the big deep dish joints.

Ginos is my personal favorite as well.

Pequods is an interesting side option, but definitely isnt traditional Chicago style.

I would say pequods and Lou's are tied for my favorite. I think Gino's and giordanos are a joke compared to the other two. Giordanos is just cheese and bread imo

It'll be hard to decide between Loui's and Pequod's, I've heard good about both in this thread but they seem to be the common ground. I'll probably do both.

If you're looking to do the whole 'authentic Chicago deep dish' thing, I wouldn't do Pequod's - not because it isn't good but just because I don't think it's really true Chicago deep dish.

I would def do Giordano's or Chicago's. I think Chicago's is the most true chicago style deep dish, but thats my opinion. Chicago's is awesome. Also, you have to go to Portillos. This is a must. If you eat meat, you have to have the italian beef. Amazing. Actually the whole menu is. If you like steak, the bone in filet is amazing at Chicago Cut. The steakhouse is awesome, pricey though. Seriously, you have to get Chicago's for pizza. I also love Dagostinos thin crust. Portillos is a must. Also, if you like char hot dogs and burgers, the weiner circle in lincoln park is a must! Simply amazing!

    Other restaurants to consider:

Fairly new/trendy on the nicer side:

    RPM
    Girl and the Goat
    Publican
    Mercadito
    Tavernita
    Mastros

I agree with everything that you have said here BESIDES Chicago's Pizza. Don't get me wrong, it's fine pizza but I would only order it late-night (open till 4am). For any visitor I would go to Lou Malnati's either on State or Wrightwood.

Wednesday show!?! C'mon DMB, think about the College kids out there

Whatever, I am going. Sucks I won't be able to do the "arrive at 5:30am and wait to get rail in GA" like I did at Xcel with all the TC'ers.
I will be leaving Wednesday around 11:00 and arriving at the venue around 230-300 hopefully.
Me and my friend Abby will swing by and see if anybody wants to go do a beer 30 at a local pub.

Can't wait to see everyone again.

This show is for Benny O!!!

excellent advice here about Portillos. deep dish pizza is a block of cheese on a thick crust. I mean its ok, but its a block of cheese no matter where you go. Portillos is the real deal. Beef sandwich, ribs or chicken sandwich, cheese fries, and milk shake, all must haves...but like you said literally the entire menu is good, and you'll spend like 10 bucks.

For your trendy list, let me say Tavernita is an awful waste of time. I hated the food, just hated it. The atmosphere is cool, but for food, go elsewhere. GATG is just impossible to get into, I still haven't. RPM is awesome Italian, run by the E! couple Bill and Guliana (sp). Mastros is in the running for best and most expensive steakhouse. Publican is a pig lovers dream. Mercadito blasts techno music for Sunday brunch and guys wear sunglasses inside. But the food is pretty good.

Alright guys, Portillo's is great, I eat there all the time. All of us in Chitown love Portillo's. But it's not even close to the best italian beef or hot dog's that you can get in the city. Go to the original Al's Beef or the original Mr. Beef for italian beef.

I don't eat meat but make exceptions in Chicago.

I did Portillo's last year and loved the hot dogs, and went to Al's for an Italian Beef, those are two places I def want to revisit.

I prefer the portillos italian beef over anywhere else, but I think they are all a little different. I also do love Mr Beef and Al's. In my opinion, its portillos then mr beef then als, but that is just opinion. Also, the hot dogs seriously are just something else at portillos. You can tell its a good hot dog becasue of the the snap of the casing when biting into it. Delicious. People love the chilli dog- I would get it without the cheese. Also, try the beef n chedder croissant. Deliciouis. Also, the cheese fries is a must. lol i just keep going. OK one last thiing. I do not even like chocolate cake, but it is unbeleivable how good it is at portillos. SOOOOOO MOIST!!! Seriously, if you like cake, heck even if you don't, get that chocolate cake for dessert. They also serve beers there in huge chilled glasses...

I enjoyed a couple things off the tavernita menu a lot, but I did also here some bad reviews from people.

Girl and the goat- Best bet is to go there and sit at the bar area- they serve a full menu.
