Interesting question. I've rated a few beers just based off a sample but I've stopped doing that, simply because sometimes beers change during the course of drinking them. Maybe you get a little bit of an after-taste after the first sip which you don't think much of, but then it starts to bother you more as you get deeper into it. Other beers get better as you drink them.
It's also tough trying/rating different beers in one sitting. It becomes more about comparison than the merits of the beer itself. If you rate the first beer a 4.25, and the second beer isn't quite as good, does that automatically make it a 4? Or would it have been a 4.25 if you didn't have the first one?
