Right. I believe the scotch is tamed a bit more as it ages in regards to peatiness and smokiness. Non-Islay scotches that I thoroughly enjoy are Balvenie Single Wood (15 yr), Glenlivet Solera Reserve (15 yr), and if you can ever splurge, definitely try to pick up a bottle of Aberlour A'Bunadh..definitely THE best non-Islay scotch I've yet to have.
Also, take a look at ralfystuff on youtube. He has a few hundred scotch reviews and frankly the videos are all pretty interesting, maybe it will give some scotch fanatics here some direction.
