Top 5 DMB shows 2009-present

What are the top 5 shows that DMB has played since this new version of the band debuted with the Big Whiskey Album in 2009. Not just shows that you were at, but the top 5 shows that standout during this era 2009-2014.

Pretty much this for the top three. Fortunate enough to have been at all of them!

I doubt I will ever be convinced that a show when Dave couldn't sing belongs on this list.

Alpine N1 & N2 2012 should be apart of this IMO.

Had this debate in a different thread. The tape doesn't do this show justice. It was just one of those you had to be there shows. Amazing set list and the Vusi everyday was one of the loudest moments of any dmb show ive been to.

That might be true. I've always had a hard time with the "you had to be there" argument. I think most fans' bias is to believe or want to believe their show was great.

There are a lot of circumstances surrounding the show that are pretty great — Vusi, being at MSG in the first place.

But when you cut away all of that stuff and get down to the performance itself, I don't see it. It's saying "the show is great if you overlook this major flaw." If you have to handicap it, I don't think it belongs.

Like AC N3. There is a show that is unequivocally great. You don't have to qualify it or say you had to be there. It just is.

If that's the case then the argument could easily be made for Cville '10 N2. I will always maintain that they released the wrong show from that weekend. But that's another show that gets the 'had to be there' treatment, and thus I don't think it would belong on a Top 5 list if we are speaking strictly of performance.

I pretty much agree with this. I might swap out the Lakeside N3 for another 2013 though. Maybe swap it with spac 13. I will be very let down if we do not eventually get Camden 2013 and Alpine 2012 released.

His voice was a bit rough, but not for the entire show. There are people on these boards who are full of criticisms for the newer era DMB that have said this is one of the best shows. You can assume whatever you want about his voice, but again, you weren't there, and the tapes sadly don't do the show justice. I've seen shows for 15 years, and it's easily near the top of my list.

Ok, but how is that different than a show being ruled out because the set list was 'a bit rough' for a 2-3 song stretch? If we are going to disqualify shows for a slightly imperfect set list, then I don't understand why we would let a show with a slightly imperfect performance (i.e. Dave's voice) stand as a Top 5 candidate.

(In addition, a lot can be hidden during a live show with regards to vocal performance. Those imperfections tend to come through a little more apparent on the tapes. The tapes don't lie when it comes to the quality of Dave's voice on a given night.)

The tape doesn't do the crowd and the atmosphere that night any justice at all... that's all we are saying (people who were there). It was an unreal 2-3 hours i can never forget, place was rocking.

That's not my argument. Show me a show (ha, that's funny) that you think is amazing with a rough 2-3 song stretch, and I'll give you my opinion, but I can only do that setlist wise (looking at a piece of paper). Dave's voice has never been the reason the band is so good live. I'm not even sure it breaks the top 5 reasons. There are so many other factors (besides Dave's voice being rough for half the show) that make this show so great. The band played like I've rarely heard them play. It was like they all said, 'hey, we're at MSG and Dave's voice is going. Let's play one hell of a set and absolutely light this place on fire', and that's exactly what they did. Just like someone could say that the most mediocre show, set-list wise, was just incredible; I have no business arguing with that person's opinion because I wasn't there and for all I know, the band could've been channeling Jesus. I only know what I witnessed, and I feel like I'm a credible source since I've seen them a number of times over the years, at some of their peak performances. It was hands down one of the best concerts I've seen.

I understand all of that and again I think it gets back to how different people rate shows. For me personally, I was attracted to this band because of Dave's song writing and singing. I listen for the quality of his voice and ability to sing the falsetto parts of his songs at every show I attend. There were some otherwise solid shows I attended in 2005 that were ruined for me because his voice was shot. And his voice was fantastic at VA Beach this year and I enjoyed the hell of that show, largely for that reason.

We're all different and enjoy this band for different reasons. My opinion on the matter is that if we are talking about the Top 5 shows (out of a couple hundred options), then the set list AND performances need to be flawless. If we can't find 5, then that speaks to a bigger problem.

I don't know anything about the show you and others are talking about and would love to check it out at some point soon, however I completely disagree on the bold section. His voice as an instrument is a pretty important one that adds power and emotion to every show that the crowd feeds off of.

Yeah, Dave's voice is definately important to me. I was at MSG and it was an incredible, unique experience, but it was also the exception and not at all the rule.

dave's voice was shot only for the first few songs at the MSG show... and the crowd carried him the rest of the way, band was on point that night too... usually his voice in central to the show, but it didnt have to be that night...

We're talking about MSG '10 N2. I'm not saying I don't love Daves voice because I absolutely do. I am saying, however, that his voice is not, musically speaking, one of the top parts of talent when it comes to this band. Carter is the most talented in my opinion. Daves songwriting. Roi's sax playing. Those are all things I'd put ahead of his voice. My point is that while no one wants to hear dave in shitty voice, he's not known for astounding vocals as it is. As for conveying emotions, that night his voice was conveying emotions like I've never heard. Even not in full voice, he gave it everything he had and the crowd ate it up.

Give me a show with high energy, a great setlist, a fantastic guest, and half of the show with hoarse dave over an above average setlist, typical energy show anyday. Additionally, if his voice is one of your (generally speaking) favorite things about the band, I'd hope those people would put 2014 pretty high up there in terms of ranking tours, because his voice was on point this tour.
