I used my dad's old Pioneer for years before I finally bought a new one. I can't remember the model but it was a really great table by mid-late 70s standards.

Are you using the original stylus or did you put on a new one?

All original. PL-771AZ is the model #. I'm guessing its and early 90's model maybe late 80's. The needle was trashed when I got the player in the mail. Obviously . Just got the new one 2 days ago. What difference could a new stylus make?

A cheap stylus/cartridge/needle will not give you nearly as accurate sound and frequency response as a nicer one, and in addition will erode the grooves of the records over time, where a high end stylus will actually polish the grooves and can make the record sound (marginally) better over time.

DobyBlue is a better person to get specifics from, he always has some great recommendations on upgrades and such. In fact I think there may be some links further back in this thread.

Ill check it out. How much is a good stylus? I kind of just want more records right now. I will definitley look into upgrading whatever I can on the player though.

Yeah it's definitely something you want to do gradually as you get more into it. If you add say, one piece per year to your system you can build a nice vinyl setup over time.

The best thing about vinyl (aside from the fidelity of course) is being able to go into a record shop and just get lost in browsing all the great used LPs. You can go to Best Buy and spend $25-30 on 2 CDs, or you can spend the same amount at a record shop and walk out with a huge armful of great albums.

What kind of cartridge did you put onto that Pioneer? Honestly upgrading the turntable itself may be a better first step, because they will often come equipped with a much nicer cartridge so you're kind of killing 2 birds with one stone.

hmmm I really wonder how much better it will sound. I don't really want to upgrade the receiver and everything. I mean this sounds fine to me right now. I didn't even have one last week so I am good for a while I think. I may just stock up on Vinyls for a while.

I've got a Thorens TD-160 with a Grace G-707 tonearm and a Grado Prestige (red I think don't remember honestly). It's my dad's old record player that he used before he got into Linn stuff. Pretty nice little closet find though. Vinyls amazing. There's really nothing like it.

just to follow up, my different-sticker version was still mislabelled. i again requested a new one and they sent another mislabelled one. so the verdict is that they're all like this.

I'm not familiar with that table, but Pioneer's equipment has usually been of high quality and with the exception of the plastic $99 turntables it doesn't look like that turntable would be an exception.

If you have a local hifi dealer ask him if he's familiar - some of these guys have been intimately involved with vinyl for 30+ years so they'd likely be happy to help you make sure the sylus pressure and tracking, etc., is set-up properly.

Which was the one you got from Amazon, the first one or the second one? Does the new one play dead straight? Where was that one from...I'd like to get one. I don't care about the labelling, but I can hear the pitch difference in Dive In and Baby Blue noticeably and it does bother me, I'd like to correct that more than anything else.

You ordered it originally from them though right?
I went to Record Archive in Rochester, NY (I'm in Canada) so I could get a copy of the 7" single. I'm not going all the way back down there to swap it.

Does anyone that's ordered from Amazon or Best Buy recently know if their copy is playing dead centre or not? That's all I care about.
