No McDonald's...where do you go for work

Hi I'm a 21 year old college student currently attending the university at buffalo. There is one problem that I've had and that is being unemployed. I have always been able to get jobs, but now with the expectation to write cover letters and resumes it is becoming overwhelming. I build up so much anxiety writing these stupid cover letters and when there done I don't even get the job.

Does anyone else feel this way and how did you get your job. Right now I am pretty ambitious to get a job in my concentration and am leaning toward those companies, but what I want to know is how did you find/get the job

Thanks

Hopefully it doesn't involve too much reading comprehension.

I got my first job after college like many others...through connections.

I wish I can find a direction to go in first. At least you know what you want to do.

Did you try the university? I'm constantly hiring students, but only if they have a resume. You can get a LOT of experience in any field because most university's have offices like businesses do

That is the purpose of college to try to tell you what direction to go in to. I was a sophomore when i decided and its just the problem of finishing

The cover letters are the thing that kills me...It's like writing everything that is good about yourself but sometimes i just want to say ok i just need the money and want to do something that i like while doing it

at my job i am the only employee and it's just me and my boss. i work on 6 rental properties as well as hauling off tree logs and random work. i set my own hours and don't have to come in if i don't feel like. i also make around $15 per hour. oh and my boss also picks me up for work every day and takes me out to lunch 2-3 times a week. it's a pretty sweet job. haven't worked in well over a week now though since rothbury kicked my ass and i took tuesday and today off. but going back to work tomorrow.

    Bullshit. You don't need connections.

    You're clearly not trying.

Write a resume. Write a cover letter.

    Grow a pair.

    And get a job.

So what you're saying is you have a "fake" job. Sounds like one helluva high school/college job though, but just keep in mind the real world ain't so cushy.

I'm going into my Senior year in the Fall and to those who claim no connections are necessary, it's true...if you want to work a shit job. If you're looking for something that will get you going places, 90% of the time you need connections. It's 2008 and a degree is not what it used to be. Good luck out there...

There are plenty of financial companies looking for entry-level workers in the Buffalo area all the time.

Have you even done a job search? And the interwebs have all kinds of information on resumes and cover letters for different jobs.

Internet - it's not just for porn, downloading music illegally, and snarky message boards anymore.

This was my question. I mean, to the OP, have you even tried? Or have you just thrown your hands in the air, decided it's too hard to write a cover letter and then posted on Ants about it? If you're serious about getting a job in your field, that will easily come through in the cover letter you eventually write and the way you tailor your resume. Trust me, this is the easy part. Writing a cover letter and a resume is nothing. Getting someone to give you an interview and then taking the interview is the hard part. Finding a job is sometimes harder than having a job but you have to actually apply before you'll be considered.

All you really have to do to get a job is outline your desire, how your qualifications meet the skill set needed to fulfill a position and then communicate that on paper to the hiring manager. What kind of job do you want? Where do you want to work? What hard and soft skills do you have to offer? You have to be serious about it if you want people to take you seriously.

Otherwise, I suggest McDonald's as some others have.

When I was looking for a job, I was on Monster/Craigslist/CareerBuilder/etc. every day. I set a goal that I would apply to 30 jobs every day and it took me a month to find my current job. It's definitely true that it's harder to find a job than keep a job. I also interviewed with a lot of temp agencies, and they can usually find you jobs pretty quickly if you've got above-average skills in anything. They found me two jobs the week I was hired to my current position.

    And I work in finance.

ajb.org is also a good resource for jobs not posted on Monster and the rest.

To the op: try looking at www.iambuffaloniagarajobs.org

They have stuff that doesn't appear in the News or on Monster.

Does your school have a career services? If so they have things like mock interviews, resume and cover letter workshops. Also, I had to take a class on how to write cover letters, personal statements, resumes in order to graduate. It helped me big time applying to law school, as my personal statement was almost complete a year before it had to be.
