Carter Beauford vs. Jon Fishman

Obviously this is a home game for Carter, being this is AM, but how would you all compare them in terms of eliteness? My vote is Carter and by a good margin.

I love Phish and think Fishman is great but I just don't see it when my friends say Fishman is a top 5 drummer in the game.

Confused as to why you're so confused? A fun question that I was curious to hear everyone's thoughts about the comparison, being both of these bands have been consistently associated for years.

How dare I post something on the board other than a complaint about shows, albums, or how loud Tim is turned up in the mix. Hope I didn't ruin your day, guy.

Yeah, Carter and it's not close.

One is generally considered one of the better rock drummers of all time and one is the dude after whom Phish is named.

DMB and Phish are my two favorite bands, so there's the disclaimer.
Love them both, but they have totally different styles of playing. Fish compliments the loose, improv based sound of Phish. We all know what Carter brings to the table. I'd say Carter is more talented, but I love them both.

I don't think Fishman is as good as Carter, but he is very underappreciated, IMO. He does a lot of really subtle stuff that's great but easy to miss if you're not really listening.

Oh, I wasn't confused. It's just a really dumb question for the 2 reasons I stated. 51% is "why bother with this question on a DMB board" and 110% is "Really? It's pretty clear that Carter is a better drummer."

So, yeah, that's it. Didn't ruin my day... there's just no real conversation to be had. You want to compare Carter to Mike Portnoy, Tim Alexander, Neil Peart, Mike Mangini, John Bonham (no order specific to goodness nor a complete list of awesome drummers), sure go ahead... but Fishman? Give me a break.

Both serve very, very different purposes. Love 'em both. Impossible to pick one, so I'll just go with Kris Myers.

Those saying it "isn't close" need to do more listening.

Both are fantastic drummers. Two completely different styles, but skill wise Carter is the better drum.

Bonham? Really? Carter and bonham couldn't be any more different. Fishmans cymbal work and different time changes is up there with the best ever.this board is funny. Anytime a "best of" list that doesn't include DMB or maybe doesn't rank them high enough people complain but on a topic like this they are ok. List when it comes to music/muscians are fucking ridiculous.

They're too different drummers, both absolutely phenomenal. I've listened to a lot of Phish the last three years after being such a big DMB fan, and Fishman is incredibly important to what Phish is able to do with its sound. I don't even need to explain Carter's talents.

So no, it is close like a lot of the ignorant posts in this thread fail to acknowledge. Neither are better and both are incredible in their own way.

Haha... I was drunk yesterday. I think that and my disdain for Phish took me off the rail for a moment.

What I would normally say to say is... there are not 'better' or 'bests' when it comes to music, only favorites. If someone likes Fishman more, by all means, that is their choice.

I like to look at it this way too, especially with drummers, but with musicians in general. Everybody just speaks in a different way. There isn't an objective "better" or "best", but I do prefer Carter's drumming. As a drummer myself, he is very inspirational to me.

Fishman is serviceable. He's good for what his role in the band requires. He's just not in Carter's league.

The biggest criticism I have of Carter is that he tries to do too much sometimes. There are some songs where he could back off a little and it'd be better. But that's nitpicking.
