I don't know if there's actually a problem, or if Boyd's abilities are just failing him. I won't speculate on either because it isn't fair to him.
But if something's up that can be corrected, the bold is so much easier said than done. In the history of music there have been countless examples of someone struggling with whatever (fame, addiction, medical conditions, etc) where the band, management, whoever simply did not help. Garcia, Cobain, Winehouse, Hoon -- in each of these cases it was well known that there were issues and no one could reach the afflicted in time. Hell, when Phish broke up it was Trey who spearheaded it, and he was the one with the biggest problem.
It's weird and seems kind of stupid, but there's definitely a "everything's fine" mentality in music that you don't really see in other facets of the world.
