You mean you've never smelled bud like that? Or you think it was something else? Maybe opium? That would make sense with how out there he's been recently.

You're dropping your bow, your playing has become so bad that we have to mute you half the time. What can we do to help?" Though nothing has changed over the past 4 years or so, so it looks like we're stuck with what we got.
I don't know if there's actually a problem, or if Boyd's abilities are just failing him. I won't speculate on either because it isn't fair to him.

But if something's up that can be corrected, the bold is so much easier said than done. In the history of music there have been countless examples of someone struggling with whatever (fame, addiction, medical conditions, etc) where the band, management, whoever simply did not help. Garcia, Cobain, Winehouse, Hoon -- in each of these cases it was well known that there were issues and no one could reach the afflicted in time. Hell, when Phish broke up it was Trey who spearheaded it, and he was the one with the biggest problem.

It's weird and seems kind of stupid, but there's definitely a "everything's fine" mentality in music that you don't really see in other facets of the world.

I'm not saying they should replace anyone just if there is a better musician out there, but if your violinist cannot play his parts anymore, you need to at least consider replacing him. Are there better drummers than Carter? Maybe. Should he be replaced? Hell no. His performance is not affecting the music in a negative way at all. Boyd's has for years now, and if it's something as stupid as drugs or disinterest, than I expect the rest of the band to be smart enough to know that their livelihood is at stake for no good reason. If it is a health issue, I see the band as being a lot more sympathetic and willing to sacrifice performance for it and work around it. That's why I would think it is a degenerative health issue that has been hurting Boyd's performance and not drugs or indifference.

Or maybe he has always been hit or miss and lately his batting average has dropped. But it seems to me when I first started seeing this band in the nineties you could enjoy Boyd on a lot more than 2 or 3 songs a night.

    Re: Bow Drops

I know these situations are much different but during Clarence Clemon's final years with the Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band he was basically a shell of his former self. Barely played any extended solos and would sit or lean off to the side of the stage. He wasn't adding much to anything musically to the band but he was "The Big Man" and the crowd adored him.

Of course this is all speculation with Boyd, but Clemon's was limited to serve health complications but kept on being a part of the show. His presence alone was worth it having him on stage in his black hat and long coat. Boyd brings a similar presence to the band, having him off to the side of the stage with his dreds flowing as he plays along to the songs and his occasional Dave and Boyd jam out is what he's all about. The bow drops are a problem and his "skrees" take away from the song but his presence alone over comes those flaws.

I think it's more like there's an "everything's fine" mentality in families. These guys, and most bands that have been together for as long as they have, are a family and they have all of the problems that come with that. It might sound easy to us for the band to basically have an intervention with Boyd, but I guarantee you there is A LOT going on between everyone that we just have no clue about. There is no easy solution and I imagine every single guy on stage, plus some management and crew, are struggling with what's going on up there.

This thread also reminds me of an interview I read with Dave once where he said that if Roi had passed immediately after the accident, that might well have been the end of DMB. It was only because they thought he was coming back that they were able to go on.

Pretty much every single from What Would You Say through Where Are You Going was big on mainstream radio. They were able to sell out multiple nights at football stadiums during that run. They have not done that since. So I'd say their success was very much based on hits. They would not have the smaller but still very sizable following they still have today if it wasn't for their mainstream success in the '90s and early 2000s.

I like Boyd. He's a cool dude. As a musician though he's always been in the weakest in the band. Doesn't seem like takes it very serious and he hasn't really improved over the years.

You're correct. I just don't feel their legitimacy as a band should be largely derived by how many mainstream hits they have or how often they have them, especially if they don't really seem particularly focused on creating them. Their legitimacy should come from the fact that they still draw crowds of ten thousand+ to amphitheaters 50-60 times a year, 9 years after having their last mainstream hit.

But yes, I understand that a large portion of these folks were turned on by the radio hits.

I go between being worried and annoyed. Obviously I'm not annoyed to the point I won't listen to recordings etc., but it's a bit frustrating to go to a show when he's either not audible (for good reason apparently), or plays off pitch and skrees around stage and misses queues.

If it turns out to be a legit mental thing, or a bad drug thing then I'd obviously change my tune.
