I think they just wanted to finish what they started and get a polished finished version of it out to the world.


I also think it happened to suck compared to the unfinished version, but that's a different story.

I'm not saying everything is like this but I think there is a certain fondness or appreciation for when you hear something the first time. With the Lillywhite sessions people had over a year to listen to those songs and make that the version they love before Busted Stuff came out. Obviously this has probably been debated to death.

Weezer kind of had a similar situation with Maladroit where they released mp3s of almost the whole album before it was finished. Those were "rawer" songs than what ended up being on the album and I myself like those earlier versions better. Was it because I heard them first and had more time with them? Maybe. Are they actually better? Who knows.

That being said while I think the Lillywhite Sessions are an almost masterpiece (it doesn't help that a lot of lyrics are garbled) Busted Stuff is one of DMB's best works. But that probably has more to do with the songs than the production quality.

There's not much of a question that tLWS is better than BS. The assertion that making Busted Stuff was a money grab to make up for tLWS being leaked, and as a result not generating revenue, is a terrible take.

Whoever was in charge of music at the restaurant I was at a few nights ago was a huge DMB fan, lots of songs played including Big Eyed Fish from tLWS, the last couple minutes of that song are amazing between Dave's vocals and BT

They made no money on tLWS, therefore its impossible for the actual album from those songs to be a money grab. Its a ridiculous notion.

Truth. The reason that the Band didn't finish and release the Lillywhite Sessions was because they weren't satisfied with the direction of the songs and the album as a whole. It didn't mean that they hated the songs (clearly, since they never stopped playing them live). So they re-visited the songs in the studio and got a outcome that was more up to par with their idea of how the songs should sound and the finished album should be.

I thought a copy of the CD got shared with a friend, and then loaned to someone who loaned it to someone else, and the rest is history. Never heard the "got stolen out of his car" story.

I know it ended up in the hands of a member of a DMB cover band, and through him it ended up on Napster. But he received that copy from "a friend", or something. I suppose how that "friend" got his hands on it is up for debate. But there is one consistent in all of the stories I've heard... It was Fonz's copy that somehow got out.

This seems to be the official account of how it leaked.

He received his copy from a ‘friend’ who had a ski house in Colorado. This friend was allowed to listen to the album by a member of DMB, who was at the ski house in the winter of 2000. While said member was out skiing, the disc was “liberated”, copied and returned to its resting place unbeknownst to the DMB member.

didnt say car. it was stolen from his cabin while he was out snowboarding. the rest is history...

I agree 100%! I guarantee he read the last few pages of this thread and decided to get off. He ironically is suddenly is taking a break from twitter. May be a coincidence, but knowing him, probably not! LOL!
