Stem Cell Research

Great show on KLRN right now about stem cell therapy. I recently did a research paper on this, and have been reading up on it on my own time. The surgerys are amazing and do incredible things. I have a family member who is going to have the surgery they are talking about in the next couple of years. I know there has to be some med students around here. What are yalls take on it?

I totally support it. But if you do too, you'll rethink your affiliation with Bush. He sees this as an anti-abortion thing........

My father was diagnosed with MS coming up on 6 years ago. From what I heard SCR could pretty much wipe it out. I hope and pray that those in power will for once look at the good instead of the "bad". Not only for me and my family, but for everyone who knows someone with an illness or disease that this could help cure.

Which is why I say get that religious nut out of office.

according to a speaker who came into one of my classes a week ago, stem cell research is a lot like abortion, because in both you are killing an embryo, which technically is human life, therefore it is looked at as murder, like abortion.

im anti-abortion, but to me, if stem cell research can cure life threatening diseases in the future such as cancer and AIDS, then i support that part of it

Well I don't agree nor base my support of a canidate solely on one issue, as I'm sure you don't either. I don't agree with him on that issue, but I do with a lot of others. Totipotent cells can be an abortion issue, but today's stem cell research is drifting away from using those types of stem cells. I don't like how they classified all stem cell research as an abortion issue though as you said.

My personal opinion is the gov. needs to pull their head out of their arse and fund more types of research.

not trying to be insensitive towards you, but anti-abortion is not just based on religion. i said this in another thread. its been scientifically proven that from the point of conception, human life begins. therefore, abortion kills human lives, and stem cell research is related to this, because of the killing of embryos for research. i support SCR, but its not just a religious thing for people who are anti-SCR

My Dad was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) about 2 weeks ago. It is 100% fatal (50% die within 12-18 months). I've been reading that SCR could open up new avenues for treatment, and am hoping desperately that it happens, and soon.

Stem cell therapy can use your own cells to cure a disability. Scientist take your multipotent cells out of your body, geneticaly fix the damaged cell, and reinsert them to fix the problem, and thus completely avoid the whole abortion issue.

i hope your dad survives more than 12-18 months. if you happened to watch the masters last weekend, tom watson's caddy bruce edwards just died last thursday from ALS about a year after being diagnosed. hopefully your dad will outlive doctor's expectations.

Thanks, that's sweet. He's going downhill really fast. He's only 49, and I'm so MAD about it.

We were watching the Masters (my husband is a golf nut) and saw that, which of course sent me on to another crying spree.

I have no time for this. As a mother, I dislike abortion. However, I think everyone has the right to decide their own fate. Now back to the point. SCR can help MILLIONS. It is a miracle.

well you had time to reply. and theyre not deciding their own fate, theyre deciding the fate of someone else who hasnt been born

and i was also just explaining how SCR doesnt have to be religious, and based on science, it is taking life

there's only one type of cell i believe that deals with abortion, and scientist are using other stem cells for research, so it really isn't an abortion issue i think.

April and Missy , I want to send you my good thoughts.

I was under the impression that SCR can be done with out aborting the fetus. That cells can be taken from the ambilical chord... This is a wonderful medical development and I hope they are successful.

I too and sorry for your family missy and april.

And yes stem cells are extracted from the ambilical cord after birth if chosen to do so. The show I was watching told this story about this two brothers. The oldest one had cancer in his lymph system and had to have treatment fast. All the chemo destroyed his t cells and immune system. When his younder brother was born, they took stem cells from the ambilical chord and used them to rebuild the oldest brothers immune system back. They could do this becasue the brothers were a genetic match, and the cells wouldn't be rejected. The reinserted the cells into the heart of the oldest, and today he is now cancer free as if he didn't have cancer before. An amazing story.
