Re: Acoustic Set Discussion

Loving the acoustic sets so far, there is so much space in everything they are playing with the acoustic set up and there isn't 16,000 notes in one measure of music, so good and it's great to hear Dave's guitar!

I really really really hope that this whole experiment will encourage Tim to bring his acoustic to the 'full band' setting occasionally. That would be awesome.

Acoustic sets are fantastic! The electric sets have been lazy and predictable. Their is no reason why a Dave solo song (Sister) should show up in the encore - none! The band should expirement with this. They should re-invent the songs they enjoy playing so much. Cornbread, Eh Hee, Jimi Thing, Spaceman, You and Me - I don't like these songs very much but if they are going to be a staple at every show and I am forced to sit through it, at least try something new with them.

I know we are only 2 shows in, but I hope the band becomes more expirimental and tries new things in the acoustic set (like bringing back the old school outro to Two Step).

Also, there is no excuse for the original encore being cut from Saturday. Complete laziness.

Huh? THERE have been Dave solo songs played as E1 for pretty much the entire history of DMB, or at least Dave playing songs solo to start the encore.

Correct, but he's saying that with the Acoustic set and stripped down versions of songs early on, there's less reason to see Dave solo spot in the encore. I agree -- I'd rather a monster encore like LT8 (Typical > Warehouse), or a great run like LIOG (reprise) > Pig > Halloween or something.

How have the tapes sounded for the acoustic stuff? Crowd noise tolerable?

This experiment probably guarantees that this will NEVER happen.

Many people wanted to hear Tim on acoustic, and how they can, during one whole set.

I don't think Tim (on acoustic) would cut through much during the electric set. Dave barely cuts through. Everything is else is just too loud for that.

The tape from 5-16 sounds incredible, and crowd noise is staggeringly absent.

Then again, the stand was at 17ft.

What's going on in these acoustic sets is beyond exciting! FG> agreed, but Saturday's electric set was abysmal (on paper that is, all due respect to the folks who attended).

Some of these song choices have been great. FG> acoustic, agreed. Dave taking some heat for songs that really push Boyd at this point. After a few listens, Sugar Man actually has some cool vocal styling in it.

Even Stolen Away sounds enjoyable and fresh. Something I thought I'd never say. FG> Despite popular opinion, have always liked it. A little repetitive, but such a nice chill tune. Jeff is awesome. Rashawn, love you buddy, but you can sit down on this one.

Tim's acoustic fills are ridiculous. FG> I knew it could be this good - why Dave took so long to see these possibilities is beyond me. Now fix set 2 please. Starting to think they are playing set 1 for the hardcores, and set 2 is for the dorks going crazy for Corn Bread. "Aaaaah, play anything....they'll love it."

And for once there's still an element of surprise to the show. FG> 'bout time.

I cannot wait to see how the summer unfolds! FG> That's the saving grace for set 2 - they will gain their stride around SPAC and set 2 will be kickin' during June (i.e., Camden )

I am curious about this, as well. I am in the lawn N1 at Deer Creek, but lower pavilion for N2... guess I'll get to hear the difference for myself soon enough.

I'm trying so hard not to watch any of the videos, but all these comments have me really excited. If only (they stopped playing if only) the electric sets would liven up a little bit.

Its just a matter of mixing. Their instruments certainly have the ability to cut through, if they mixed it right. Dave has been more prevalent this year and last year though, which is a nice change.

The Friday show's tape for the acoustic set is incredible. I may start collecting acoustic sets only if they continue to rock.

For those asking about the lawn, it was fine in Dallas. The acoustic set was just about as loud as the electric set was. I think part of the allure of the acoustic set is that each individual instrument can be heard. The guitar in Recently, for example, was great. I could really hear Carter's bongo-ing very well, too. Lawn seats are definitely okay for the acoustic set!

These acoustic sets are bringing back some memories , the tapes, I mean.

I was driving around a bit ago listening to Billies from the Woodlands tape and it reminds me of trading actual tapes of shows from the 90's with my friend, that sound brings me back.

I think people are missing the boat on Rashawn's solo in Stolen Away...I think he has done a great job on them. It makes me feel like I am in a jazz club in NY back in the day. Not always making perfect sense harmonically or staying within the correct key, but experimenting and playing some avant-garde notes as well.

Minarets from Friday's set is really good. Just listened to Luther College again and wow i could barely tell the difference between the two versions... I love the old school feel to the acoustic set so far. This is what turned me onto DMB back in the mid 90's.

Dave keeps saying how much he is liking this and how fresh it is (then why not freshen up 2nd set too??), it looks like the band is having a blast, and they sound like the 90s again...play more acoustic songs damn it!

Just listened to the 9.30.92 show from The Flood Zone which they played acoustic and was wondering if they would break out Angel from Montgomery. Really dig that song, and enjoy Boyd's vocal and playing on it.

In terms of crowd noise/band volume. The acoustic set is anything but quiet. Even Stolen Away (probably the softest song they've played yet) was pretty loud. This isn't a D&T setup.

Also, I think the earlier start time kind of keeps some of the casual (for lack of a better word) people at bay. The people around us for Set 1 in Houston were quiet and seemed to know what to expect format wise.

Juxtapose that with the guy that showed up 1/2 way through Seek Up. He couldn't have been more of a bro, and he was obnoxious.

but dude, could Rashawn just be a little over your head possibly? The guy is one the quinessential Trumpet players around the scene. I'd love for you to point me to a show where's blatantly out of key?

this is not an attack, just the post got me fired up, and would love to hear more...

I think he's defending Rashawn's playing, not attacking it.

I think his performance on the Stolen Away outro in Dallas was better than the tape from Houston. I love the harmony he does with Jeff on the main line, and the noodling he does between phrases. Great stuff.

this is not an attack, just the post got me fired up, and would love to hear more...
Dude's, he's playing jazz. Literally, textbook jazz - licks that every jazz student can play in all 12 keys.
He's playing over the key as if it were chord 2, in a 2-5-1, which is why it sounds a little weird (and technically out of key). It's nothing too earth-shattering. Sounds cool though, I like it!

^ Okay just listened to it again, not right about the 2-5-1 thing, but it's jazz lick city!

huh? he isn't always playing notes within the same key...it's just straight jazz and it's awesome...I love what Rashawn does, especially since I was a trumpet player for 10 years and a part of concert, marching, and jazz bands...really makes me respect him that much more.

I think his performance on the Stolen Away outro in Dallas was better than the tape from Houston. I love the harmony he does with Jeff on the main line, and the noodling he does between phrases. Great stuff.
    this.

and yes I think Dallas was better as well

Where'd you play? I played trombone/bass trombone for 11 years through college at Louisiana Tech. I love when Trombone Shorty guests
