Buying a new Car

I hope this isn't a duplicate thread, the search function doesn't seem to be working for me at all lately.

I just got a full-time job out of college with a pretty decent salary and my 2001 honda civic is about to be run ragged.

with that said, I'm in the market for a brand new car. Right now I'm completely torn between the all new redesigned 2013 Nissan Altima and the 2013 Kia Optima. I also wanted to test drive the Dodge Dart.

I love the CVT on the Altima, the ride is just so smooth.

I'm looking for a 4-door somewhat sporty looking car, but more so along the lines of a mid-size sedan. I've done a ton of research and I think I have it narrowed down to these 2 cars.

Anyone have any luck with any of the cars mentioned? Or does anyone care to share stories about buying a new car?

Much appreciated!

buying my car was the most stressful and enjoyable thing i've done. glad it's over. though our price ranges differ by 2x or so.

know what you want, and what you trade off on. for me it was HP.

also, stick to your budget. as a new grad remember you have loans!

FYI on the CVT - while it's awesome and smooth, it's also expensive as fuck to replace if something goes wrong. I'm not sure when Nissan adopted this technology, but if it was a recent development - I might think twice about the Altima.

I just bought a 2008 Elantra (In June) and I love it. His name is Gronk and he gets great gas mileage. And I only paid 7500 for him.

Good luck. Buying a car is awesome/totally sucks.

I second the "buy used" comment. I bought a 2008 Altima hybrid brand new and I've been very happy with the vehicle. It's paid for in full and I own it outright, but I don't think I'd buy the car brand new again if I could go back and do it over. Let someone else depreciate the thing and then get some value out of it. California has a huge 1-2 year old used car market, I'm not sure if you can find that elsewhere.

    Re: Buying a new Car

Test drive the cars, pick the one you want and then negotiate by internet.

Contact 3+ dealers - and let them know exactly what car you want (options, color) etc and that you're contacting multiple dealerships, and looking to get a quote. Let them know you'll be purchasing within a week. Typically you want to do the deal on a weekend, towards the end of the month, and towards the end of the quarter, so if you can wait to Sep 29/30, that's a great position, as these guys are looking to get their quotas. When you get your quotes, don't always assume that the lower price is the best deal - some dealerships have freebies like free oil changes, and if a dealer near you is quoting $50 higher than a dealer 75 miles away, it's probably worth the extra $50 to buy closer.

I just bought a 2011 Camry Hybrid. Had only 15k miles and was $6-7k off the new sticker price. I wasn't planning on buying a hybrid but it has a huge upgrade in luxury and features. Not to mention the 35-40 mpg that I'm averaging. Great car and never heard one bad thing about Toyotas.

the CVT on the Audi is also shit. though if you buy a CVT on an Audi you're a worthless moron anyways.

is the CVT truly an issue? I was unaware of this. It rides so smooth and gets you great gas mileage.

edit: and I've talked with my parents, I think I would probably prefer to just get a new car.

they're super complicated and don't use fixed gears, that's why it's "smooth"

of course most people would 'prefer' new...but you just graduated and you dont really know what will happen a year from now, even though you think you do

a 1 yr old car, or even 2 yrs old gets you great value because so much of the car's worth is lost once its driven. you'll likely be able to buy a 2 yr old car with 20,000 miles on it for several thousand less than the brand new version

    just my .02

his financing rates would typically be higher on a used car too. all depends on his situation.

Plus, doesn't a bran new car also mean a 350 dollar/month car payment? Plus, being a male under 30, your insurance is probably going to blow it out the ass.

    I bet that shit sucks.

i was only able to get 4.5% on mine with only a year of history and my score was probably in the 730's

Meh, a kid coming out of school with little to no credit history is going to pay a huge interest rate. Like I said, mine was up around 10-11%. I don't see a problem if the kid has his act together, to help him get that rate down.

used to have an '06 sonata. served me well.

the new 2.0t limited is nice too. was actually going to get that instead of the Audi if my job didn't pan out.

I would never ask my parents to co-sign a vehicle. If I'm taking out a loan to buy a car, that's my debt, not theirs. Instead, I drove my '93 Corolla around for a year and a half after graduating and bought once I could get a good interest rate.

I mean, I guess I could see both sides. In my situation, my 92 Camry with 260k on it crapped the bed so I really couldn't wait.

I think it would depend on the parent & the kid.
If the kid can't get a good interest rate b/c he doesn't pay his bills on time and is irresponsible, then hell no - I wouldn't co-sign.
If the kid can't get a good interest rate b/c he's young and doesn't have much history, I would have no problem co-signing b/c I would trust them to make the payments on time.

I have a 2011 Subaru Legacy. Love it. Not sure if you can get Subaru's down in NC though. Overall, I love the car. Awesome gas mileage for an AWD midsize sedan (I'm averaging 31.5MPG). Smooth CVT transmission. Comfortable cockpit. Best quality-price ratio in the market today.

make a big down payment, make a big down payment and make a big down payment.

financing something with value that will only decrease sucks, so the less you finance the better.

oh, and make a big down payment.
