Acoustic Set Discussion

What's going on in these acoustic sets is beyond exciting! After watching some of the video that is trickling in I've noticed a few things...

- Ants Marching last night he sang with his falsetto! No more screaming!

- Some of these song choices have been great. I thought for sure they would be very heavy on the Some Devil but there have been great surprises. Minarets, Recently!

- Even Stolen Away sounds enjoyable and fresh. Something I thought I'd never say.

- Tim's acoustic fills are ridiculous. Everything about the acoustic set sounds so reserved, exactly what so many of us have been craving.

- And for once there's still an element of surprise to the show.

I cannot wait to see how the summer unfolds!

Don't Drink the Water had the falsetto too, if that's what you even call it. Acoustic sets are great, even Sugar Man sounds really cool. Electric sets need work and variety

    Re: Acoustic Set Discussion

I'm loving it. To be honest, the acoustic set has been the best part of the show and worth the price of admission. Even if the acoustic set was all I saw, I'd walk away happy.

With how typical and "2012" the Dallas show was, these are definitely taking a lot of the sting out whenever Dave mails it in. And the band is enjoying them, lots of communication, laughing, joking around and keeping it casual, they're having fun with it.

Plus, they seem to be mixing it up.

    Over two nights I saw:

    Bartender
    Stay Or Leave
    Take Me To Tomorrow
    Satellite
    Tripping Billies
    #27
    Minarets
    Two Step
    Recently
    Grace Is Gone
    Graves
    Crash
    So Damn Lucky
    Ants Marching

    Stolen Away - x2
    Sugarman - x2

So only two repeats is pretty good. It remains to be seen if these songs will stay in rotation for the acoustic set, or if they'll keep mixing it up, but I hope they keep having fun with it.

Also, for the acoustic set, you want to be on the right side of the venue. They seem to orient and face right, so if you're on the left, you can hardly see Tim, Fonz or Carter.

I agree, acoustic sets have sounded really great so far. #27 was never really a full band song I wanted to hear at shows, but that acoustic performance had such a nice groove.

Other than Tim on an acoustic (I'm assuming), what's all the difference? They are pretty much 80% acoustic normally no, and the accoustic bass is not a super big deal.

Wondering how much they sound like when there were just the 5.

The horns are more subdued and not as in your face, they play more mellow.

    You can hear Boyd better.

You can hear Dave's guitar a lot better, none of that throwing it over his back to dance shit, he actually has to play.

Carter's set with the bongos/congas sounds awesome.

It definitely hearkens back to the better days of this band.

I wish they would do whole acoustic shows, because this stuff is awesome.

I don't recall Carter playing on an acoustic set during the Crash and UTTAD tours, don't recall any tapes sounding like that either. Yoshi's maybe.

Do drums need to be bongos to be accoustic? I thought they always were by definition.

No you can have electric drums too, check out music from the 80's.

But this is a percussion set, not a traditional drum kit, in other words if they played full band Ants or Billies and Carter had this kit...it would sound pretty dodgy.

I'll listen to the tapes this week for sure. I usually don't watch too many audience vids...they are not too great for me. No offense to anyone liking them intended.

Makes sense. Sounds like each band does it a little differently.

I've caught a fair share of Panics "wood" tour and remember the kit on stage.

listening to Houston show right now and everything sounds great.
How is the crowd? Dave thanked the crowd for coming in early for the opening act. Are most people in the venue or are they walking through trying to get to the seats?
Like the laid back vibe, great Dave speak. Anyone know the guy in the Salmon shirt?

As much as I love the electric epicness. I would spends heaps of money if they decided to do a spring or fall acoustic tour. This stuff is very good indeed.

That Recently opener yesterday was absolutely fantastic. The acoustic set as a whole was great, and as Chad said, the acoustic set alone is worth going to the show for! LIOG and Ants Marching were great, as well. Great set. Can't wait to listen to tapes from Houston.

This isn't acoustic set related, but he now sings the falsetto in DDTW again. It would sound awesome in an acoustic setting.

At this point, the acoustic set is the main even and the electric set is just a bonus IMO.

I'd spend heaps if they gave up on the electric almost entirely and stayed with acoustic on all future tours.

I mean, if you want the band to be subpar, that's fair. I guess I can see the appeal in wanting to have them exclusively play to you in a basement you have access to.

And for once there is still a surprise to the show? How is two shows into this tour any more or less surprising than two shows into tours years prior?

I find that even by the end of the tour last year there were some surprises..Kashmir and #34 at the Gorge, 4 song encore. Mid tour: Halloween back to back nights at Alpine (one after Watchtower!)

Just sounds like a very whiney comment, especially for a band that mixes up their sets more than 99% of the other bands/musicians out there. If you go to 10 shows a year and spend half your life on ants analyzing set lists your probably not going to have jaw dropping, "didn't see that coming" moment at every show. With that being said I also doubt you ever see the same show twice.
