Re: The BitTorrent Helper Thread

hey strangelove,

something i've wondered about for a while: what is going on when i get a blueface in azureus? you know what i mean? sometimes i will start az up and get all green faces, sometimes they're all blue. is that tracker side or something on my end? is there anything i can really do to change the faces (i'm saying all this about faces, but i really just mean my connectibility, it's just easier to refer to the faces)?

russ

ps thanks for the help so far

    Blue face either means:

-when seeding, it means that you're not yet connected to any peer

-when downloading, it means that you are connected to some peers but the tracker is down

You can either get a plugin for your current player (if it's winamp or something), or you can download the Special foobar2000 installation and use it: http://www.foobar2000.org/

Just google for your player + shn or flac plugin (whichever format your files are).

    Re: The BitTorrent Helper Thread

    Alright guys,

Here's a question. I have the autospeed plugin on my Azureus and it does a good job of regulating speeds (what it's supposed to do) but it 1) always tops my download out at about 176 kb/s -- when i'm pretty sure i can handle more, because i've had it up around 300 before, and b) tops my upload out at 40 kb/s. it's never been higher than 40.

thing is, i'm only seeding right now, i've always got a couple seeds going, and rarely download (i use ftp) but it still tops out at 40 kb/s upload even when i'm not downloading anything. how do i find out what my max upload could be...how much up-bandwidth my connection can handle? i'm sick of doing three shows and like 12/s.

    any ideas?

There are a bunch of online bandwidth testers. Do a google for "bandwidth test" or something like that. I say this because some of them seem way off, so it's best to use a few of them so you get a good idea. I don't have any bookmarked, or I'd post a link.

    Re: The BitTorrent Helper Thread

I started downloading the 6-18 show yesterday and it got up to like 57.6%. Then someone restarted my computer either late last night or early this morning. When i signed onto XP this morning and opened Azureus, the file was at 57.6% but there has been a red smiley face next to it all day. I didnt change any firewall settings but when i test port 6881 it says NAT error. Does anyone have an idea what i could do to fix this? Thanks in advance for any advice.

Okay so I've been using BitTorrent and my status has always been yellow - I've gotten the shows it just takes a day or so since I upload very little (usually like 50mb per show). Since I AM capable of better speeds and I know its not working properly I want to figure out the problem. I'm pretty sure its my router because my only other firewall (norton) doesn't affect the status when I turn it completely off. I've searched around my router settings and can't find anything for port forwarding. It's a D-Link 524 so if anyone can help me fix the problem it would be a big help since I would like to be a better help uploading shows to others!

You can still download if you're getting a NAT error, just much more slowly, so this may have always been that way. A red face means you're not connected to any peers. Check the tracker's page and make sure there are still people on your particular torrent.

The NAT error is most likely from a firewall, so try to open the correct ports and you should be OK.

    This should help: http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.as...n=port+forward

If you do this and it's still not working, turn off of play with the settings in norton, too.

Thanks! After doing that, though, and playing around with firewall settings (I read in the manual another way of doing this) and having norton off, I still have a yellow light...

If you're using XP, make sure the built in firewall is off.

    Re: The BitTorrent Helper Thread

First of all, thank you, Dr. Strangelove. Up until this time I have been intimidated by the whole Bit Torrent thing. Well, that was until I read your Faq. I pretty much followed what you said, and atleast have the program up in running. Once again, thank you.

I do have a couple of questions though. Keep in mind that I am a complete newbie here.

    1. I tried downloading a show, and was getting a really slow speed (around 25-30). So, I bailed on the download. My question is, does this go against Bit Torrent ethics? I'm thankful for the opportunity to download shows, so the last thing I want to do is shaft someone. I know that once a show is downloaded, you should leave the program open so that others can get the show. Does this still apply if you are in the process of downloading, as well?

    2. Am I correct in assuming that you're speed depends on the time of day? For example, is it better to download a show at 5:00 pm, as opposed to 2:00 am?

Thank you for the faq and thank you for your assistance. It is appreciated.

    1. Nah, I wouldn't say it's frowned upon. So you decided you don't want the show. No big deal. Don't worry about it. You know enough to keep your program running for a while after the download is done. That's what really matters.

    2. Time of day doesn't matter. The number of seeds/peers matters. The more seeds, the faster it will go. You can see those numbers listed on the site and in your bittorrent program.

Are you by chance downloading from a university or something like that? Or work?

Are you certain the torrent has seeds/peers? It could be a dead torrent.
