Questions For Stereo Aficionados (Or someone with a general knowledge)

I'm trying to figure something out. And I realize that this is going to sound ridiculous, but whatever... I don't know the answer.

Alright, so if I have speakers that have recommended amplifier power of 100 watts, is that per speaker? Or in total?

I have a 200 watt amp. (100 watts per channel). Is that ideal for the speakers I described? Or should I be looking for an amp that is 50 watts per channel, with a overall total of 100 watts?

Thanks in advance!

Should be per speaker. The rating is usually printed on the back (is that what you are looking at?). Having an amp that doesn't reach the max power of a speaker is not necessarily a bad thing, most people will never push their speakers to the max power draw. 50W/75W/100W per channel would all work.

I'm not quite sure what rating you're talking about. Do you mean on the speakers, or the amp?

I actually got the information for the speakers directly from the manufacturers website. I've also heard that about the max power, although I've heard the higher the better. I've found through researching that too low of a wattage could be damaging to the speakers.

The back of a speaker usually has a sticker with the power rating and resistance.

The amp and speaker will be rated for max power. Running an amp with higher power output than the speaker can handle can lead to blown speakers at higher volumes. Running an amp with lower power output just means you won't be able to get as much volume out of them it won't damage the speakers though.

For resistance, amps are usually capable of running speakers with a variety of resistances. BUT everything you power from that amp should be the same resistance.

So you could run surround sound with all 8 ohm or all 4 ohm speakers but you shouldn't run 8 ohms in the front and 4 ohms in the rear. Again, the amps technical specs will identify what it is designed for.
