Wonder what episodes of Breaking Bad I should watch to re-introduce myself to the Gus/Mike/Saul/Walt connection. I only watched BB one time thru. Was it S3 when they introduced Gus? I forget.

so, it's abundantly clear, no matter how deeply you think about the electronics side of it, that mike, rather than having the GPS device on his car, as it originally was, now has it/one on whomever was tracking him's car (probably gus but we shall see)

but also breaking bad/BCS is not the type of show to just throw a bunch of electronics at the viewer and have them just accept the end result; the detail will be there to show exactly what he did.

so in that vein:

1) he got his electronics guy to determine make and model of the gps unit, but also the home device that connects to it so that the operator can actually see where the location device is

2) he bought the same one, and the monitor device too obviously

3) (this is where it gets a little unclear to me) was the radio hookup just for mike to test how long the battery would last in the location device, so he would know roughly what night to stay up to look for gus's guys to come replace the unit?

4) gus's guys come, and take the unit (that THEY think has a close-to-dead battery, but mike had just installed a new one), and I assume replace with a different unit with a fresh battery?

is this what you guys got out of it?

aaah or maybe the radio was draining THEIR device, which he just kept in his house because what's the difference, and the unit on his car was HIS unit, which to them would be behaving the same was a dead battery on their unit

He drained the battery to force them to come replace. He didn't remove the battery for fear it would alert them of his knowledge of the device. He put his new device in its place to track them. Before leaving to follow he left their new device in the gas cap on the side of the driveway so they wouldn't know he was following.

I got the impression that he was testing battery life when he had it all hooked up and that he swapped their unit out with his new one he just got from that guy so he could track them - which is why left the cap at his house when he left, because they swapped it out again with a new one and took his.

Makes more sense that he drained it so they'd be forced to come pick it up, but the second half of my post is pretty consistent with everybody else's thoughts. He swapped out the tracker so he could see who and where.

Mike, using the duplicate tracker his veterinarian friend helped him procure, realizes that the tracker hidden in his gas cap runs on a battery, that the receiver gets a warning when the battery is low, and that odds are greater that the people following him will simply swap out the whole gas cap (with a new tracker) each time the battery needs changing, since that can be done in seconds, rather than the minute or more it would take to dismantle the cap, swap the battery (or tracker), reassemble the cap, and screw it back in. He puts the duplicate tracker, which he has the receiver for, into the car, then runs down the battery from the original tracker by using it to also power his trusty transistor radio. When the batter runs low, he knows the people following him will come to replace it and drive off with what they think is their tracker, but is really his. I remembered all of Saul's storyline, for the most part.

here's my question with the tracker: Mike changed cars at the car place, did he not? wouldn't the people who originally installed the tracker on his car realize that it's not the same car he has now? Or does he have more than 1 car and they were tracking both?

The car parked in front of his house is his everyday car, I believe. Didn't he buy the car he trashed prior to his stakeout in the desert? In that case, they were tracking both cars.
