Re: New Song: Kill the King

My post from the official Pine Knob thread about the new song (I was at the show):
Kill the King was really really good...it starts out with a great bass line with high energy from the band which continues for the verses then the chorus slows it down a bit and is a progression of 4 or 5 chords. Really good song, I enjoyed it much more than The Idea of You (which i thoroughly enjoy).

Dave has killed God before, I don't think killing the president would be too extreme.

I really hope this song isn't about Bush though. The whole political thing got so tired in 2004 (not just DMB - in all aspects of music and society).

I can't wait to hear it. It has certainly brought a lot of hype and conversation with the title alone.

Just got back from the show. KTK was a really cool tune. It was kind of hard like Hunger. Dave used the electric. I remember the chorus being pretty catchy. It was hard to understand the lyrics.

I sort of wonder if this song is the one that Stefan wrote about on izstyle.

    Re: Kill The King

I think you could, it was kinda uneventful...a lot of Dave mumbling...it was played on the Jerry Jones Baritone electric...the verse is very riff oriented...it's an aggressive riff...it's like R&R meets DOOF...kinda bland though...then the chorus is more straightforward and a sort of release from the tension of the verse which is nice but it still is kinda eh...the bridge is nice though...this song needs a lot of work if you ask me. I'd say it has more potential to be a good song than anything else this tour, but these new songs are just so subpar. People can say they're the second coming of DMB all they want, but I trust my ears and I know if this was the first stuff they started putting out, they wouldn't be at all as popular as they are now. They're really riding their old tunes. Tonight was the first time I realized that they really are more of a nostalgia act these days. People just don't want to hear the new stuff. They go crazy for the old stuff and take bathroom breaks on the new stuff. It's not because they're "inferior radio fans..." It's simply that the new stuff isn't that good. I wish people would just stop making apologies and excuses for the mediocre post-1998 output from the band. It won't change anything obviously as the bands going to do what they want, but realistically, this stuff just isn't worth half the hype it gets.

I agree about IOY being subpar and also that if this was the 1st stuff they ever wrote, they'd never be super popular. BUT....Remember in the 2000 tour, people were saying they same shit bout bartender, gig, busted stuff being not as good as their "old" stuff. And THOSE were the "bathroom break" songs. I think its waaaaay too soon to jump to conclusions about any of these songs. Let them develop on tour, they way their best music is made.

I agree with all of this except the post-1998 part. I'd say DMB went mediocre post-2000.
