Are some costumes just too offensive?

People are dumb. Especially with social media.

Some examples from this year:

1. Actress Julianne Hough dressing as a character from Orange is the New Black in "black face": http://www.buzzfeed.com/lyapalater/j...loween-costume

2. People dressing up as Trayvon Martin.

3. This idiot dressing up as a Boston marathon victim: http://www.buzzfeed.com/rachelzarrel...on-victim?bffb

How are people this dumb?

Personally? I could give two shits what people dress up as. Yeah, it may be tasteless, but it is doing no harm.

I don't see that actress as offensive. It's not like she was mocking a race, she was portraying a fictional television character. The other two are offensive. They are in essence mocking something that ruined people's lives. To me, it's the equivalent of an Afghanistan person dressing up as victim of 9/11.

None of those offend me, personally.

I think you need to know your audience.

At a house party with your friends and a few strangers, you can probably get away with anything.

Twitter and downtown are probably not the best venues to show off your offensive costume.

I don't understand why blackface is universally offensive. I don't find that costume in the OP even remotely offensive. She's dressed up as a specific character. She altered her appearance to look like that character. Isn't that how dressing up for Halloween works?

If your character is "black person" and you have some stereotypical props, I can see people getting butthurt over that.

Holy wow did that girl get internet raged-on in #3. Fired from her job, her dad's company targeted, and nude pics all over the internet. In addition to the usual address death threats. Hopefully she learned her lesson and the rest of the world moves on within the next week or so....

this so fucking much. to the point where I've been afraid of saying this on fb for fear of the backlash. I mean, dressing up as Trayvon Martin may not be the most tasteful idea because he was shot, but I can't really do it WITHOUT putting on makeup to change the color of my skin.

Personally, I'm not offended by any of them, but the Boston marathon bombing victim definitely rubs me the wrong way. Blackface used to be offensive because it was used to perpetuate stereotypes and basically mock black people back in the day, but in today's world, I think it's acceptable so long as you're doing it to portray a character, like Julianne Hough did. I still could not care less about Trayvon Martin.

I'm inclined to say yes. I don't think she meant any ill will, but blackface is part of a painful past she should've heeded.

such a joke. It's time for people to stop being such pussies. It's not offensive. Some people just have to be the victims.

To answer the question, yes, SOME costumes ARE too offensive.

The third example above is case in point. No. Just no. What happened to dressing up as a witch, or a cat, or any number of non-completely offensive costumes. Why terrorism victims? Her quote, I though it was funny. You thought it was funny?!?!? Bitch please. Go blow your own legs off then come back and tell us how funny that is.

I have no issue with black face if you're dressing as a character or somebody other than a fucking Sambo or something. News flash people, some people are black. Others are not. There are black people, they exist.

This reminded me of the time the classmate of mine in 2nd grade dressed up as Dennis Rodman. Dyed hair, jersey, and yes, black face. But he didn't stop there. He blacked out his whole body. Arms. Legs. Neck. I think it was shoe polish and that shit was on everything. I remember as a 7 yr old thinking this has gotta be against the rules or something.
