what if your child was gay?

A coworker of mine asked me this the other day. My answer was I want my son to be happy and secure in who he is. If he's straight or gay I want him to be able to be open and secure in himself with his parents, his partner, his social groups.

I hope for his sake that he is straight just because that will make that aspect of life easier from a societal stand point. But no matter what his sexual identity is I want him to be happy and secure in himself.

What say y'all?

I have a daughter, So I'd probably prefer it.

but son or daughter it wouldn't really matter to me it is 2014 I feel like the attitude towards gays has changed a lot (at least here in the Northeast) not that there isn't dipshits out there but doesn't seem to be like it was years ago

If he is an otherwise normal guy that just happens to be attracted to men, then whatever.

If he is a feather boa, pride parade, cross dressing, lisp talking, effeminate, makes out with men in front of small children in public places like its perfectly acceptable, then I'll ridicule the shit out of him for being a weirdo.

It's changing but it's still not close to equal and I'm not even talking about marriage rights. I want the best possible life for my son abd being straight is easier but if he is gay I want him to be secure in that so he can face the challenges of it with a great attitude and nit have any issues to deal with because of his sexuality.

What? You want her to be into women?

I don't have children but I would support them in whatever they do. Not shaming them is key. Something you create is probably so hard to hate. I can't ever imagine hating my own child.

1: So you'd try to make sure he never knows who Hulk Hogan is?
2: So you'd keep him away from all 4th of July parades?
3: So you'd make sure he never listens to David Bowie? Genesis? Countless others?
4: So if his tongue extends beyond his front teeth, you'll be paying for some surgery to get it fixed so he won't have to speak with a lisp?
5: So he can be gay just so long as he remembers that women are inferior and that he has to be masculine?
6: So if he's straight he can do that with his girlfriend?

And by "an otherwise normal guy," what, exactly, do you mean by "normal"?

Wouldn't care one way or the other. I don't have any kids yet but all that I would want would be for them to be happy.

    Spot fucking on.

To me it's like saying, "What if you have a child that likes to read?"

Just accept your child for who he/she is. You're only doing some major pain and damage not to accept them for whatever they feel inside.

It's naïve to say life isn't more complicated for someone who isn't straight, but I also think it's asinine to treat them any differently because of it.

Because life would be easier? Relationships come with the same hardships and complications regardless of orientation.

Thanks for the contribution. There are lots of things that should preclude someone from being a parent. But anyone can make a baby so this is a very legit topic of conversation.

If you read my OP you would realize that's exactly what I said. However, sexuality is far different and much more complicated an issue than liking to read to compare the two is asinine.

when you have to go to these ridiculous lengths to try to defend loud and proud "rainbow gays", it is more evidence that they are a bunch of weirdos

I wouldn't give a shit if my kid was gay. I would give a shit if he/she was a weirdo.

There are literally millions of people who care. That's why being gay is more difficult than being straight.

Would love them just the same as if they were straight.

One of the most important things I've taught my kids is tolerance, because I hope the next generation of humans will be better than some of the ones we have now.

Truth. I would be much more concerned about a ginger child than a gay child. WA is pretty liberal...but being straight/gay/bi is essentially a non-player now. Who gives a fuck?

I feel like you guys have to be lying to yourselves if you wouldn't care. I would definitely not want a gay son, of course I would still love him but it would be different.

This might sound mean in today's world but I'm just being honest.

    This. There are three types:
    1. Those that don't like it and won't tolerate it.
    2. Those that don't like it and will tolerate it.
    3. Those that will pretend the world is unicorns and rainbows and that it doesn't matter because they're so politically correct.

I am number 2. So what?
