I'm not completely sure what the writers initially intended for Walt's character, but they had to scrap their plans and Walt all together since he hit puberty fast. He grew like a foot and his voice changed so quickly that there was no logical way they could keep him within the timeline of the show. From Wiki:

I believe there was probably something more grand in how they wanted to get him (and his dad) written into the story, but they had to change course quickly. For that reason, its just easier to pretend like Walt and his "special" abilities was never really a thing.
