Just got the same turntable last week and was wondering about a stylus upgrade as well. It sounds great (at least as far as I can tell), but I wouldn't mind spending a little bit to make it even better!

    Lets guess the track layout!

    LP 1 Side A
    1. Grux
    2. Shake Me Like A Monkey
    3. Funny The Way It Is
    4. Lying In The Hands Of God

    LP 1 Side B
    5. Why I Am
    6. Dive In
    7. Spaceman

    LP 2 Side A
    8. Squirm
    9. Alligator Pie (Cockadile)
    10. Seven

    LP 2 Side B
    11. Time Bomb
    12. My Baby Blue
    13. You and Me

Pretty straight foward. I love that Why I Am probably starts off a side.

Well LP Gear looks to have a great deal on the AT440MLa.
It lists at $299, most places sell if for $199, LPTunes has it for $119.
    http://www.lptunes.com/Audio-Technic...ge-p/atc05.htm

If you wanted to move up to a really nice MM cartridge the Goldring 1042 is $375 (often lists at $450 or more) from LPTunes.

    http://www.lptunes.com/product-p/goldrg1042.htm

That's the cartridge I was considering moving to in a year or so when I upgrade my table.

Awesome - I may pick up one of those 440MLa's. Looks like a great deal for the price. Would the stock ATP-2 be similar to this? : http://www.lptunes.com/Audio-Technic...e-p/atp2xn.htm

Definitely, but they're including an extra stylus with that. The stylus is the expensive part, usually around 80% of the cost of the cartridge.

So I'd imagine going from the stock to the 440 would be like going from a $50 cartridge to a $300 one and would no doubt offer improved silibance, frequency response and accuracy.

Sweet. Thanks so much for the info. That's gonna be my next big purchase, can't wait to hear the improvement!

If the first pressing sells out they'll run a second pressing, I wouldn't doubt that for a second.

    Re: BWGK on Vinyl

I had put together some information on turntables and phono preamps for a fellow poster so I thought I'd share the info here in case anyone finds it useful:

    Turntables –
    1) entry-level @ $350

    Goldring GR-1.2 - $350 - http://www.audiophileboutique.com/Goldring.html
Comes with a Goldring Elektra cartridge which puts it above most of the other TT’s here, the table, tonearm, plinth and platter are all made by Rega and are no longer made as they were too much value and stealing business.
    Rega P1 - $395 - http://www.musicdirect.com/product/74202
    Music Hall MMF 2.1 - $350 - http://www.lptunes.com/product-p/mmf21.htm
    Pro-Ject Debut III - $349 - http://www.needledoctor.com/Pro-Ject...2&category=352
The Pro-Ject and Rega both come with the Ortofon 5e cartridge, a good cartridge, but not quite as good as the Goldring. Most people would upgrade to the Ortofon Red cartridge which is around $99.

    2) Intermediate level @ $700~$1000
    Goldring GR-2 – US$600 – http://www.audiophileboutique.com/Goldring.html
The Goldring GR-2 comes with the awesome Goldring 1012GX cartridge which sells separately for around US$300. Truly the stylus is what makes this turntable special, it’s the one I own. The rest of the table is similar to the Rega P2 and made by Rega.
    Rega P3 Mk24 - $1,024 - http://www.musicdirect.com/product/72034
Comes with the Rega Elys cartridge, sells for $895 sans cartridge. Cartridge = $295. The new Rega P3-24 has some really nice upgrades over previous years including a wider bearing for lower rumble and an improved motor and platter.
    Pro-Ject RM5 - $999 - http://www.musicdirect.com/product/80839
Comes with the very nice Sumiko Blue Point cartridge, sweet table and sounds as good as it looks. Pro-Ject are fairly new to the TT game compared to some others listed here, but they’ve definitely produced some fantastic products and have quickly become one of the top sellers.
    Music Hall MMF5 - $629 - http://www.lptunes.com/product-p/mmf50.htm
I don’t know how it’s priced so low, but including the same Goldring 1012GX cartridge and a glass platter this is hard to beat within this price range.
    Music Hall MMF5.1 - $875 - http://www.needledoctor.com/Music-Ha...2&category=351
Includes the Goldring GL-2200 cartridge and upgrades to bearings, tonearm, etc., over the MMF5.

    3) Advanced level @ $1,000~$2,000
    Music Hall MMF 7.1 – US$1,500 - http://www.needledoctor.com/Music-Ha...2&category=351
Comes with the Goldring GL-2400 MM cartridge.
    Rega P5 - $1,400 - http://www.needledoctor.com/Rega-P5-...2&category=353
With the Rega RB700 tonearm, 12mm glass platter
    Clearaudio Emotion - $2,000 - http://www.needledoctor.com/Clearaud...2&category=347
Comes with the $1,000 Clearaudio Maestro cartridge – Clearaudio are in the top names in the TT business, this is pretty much their entry-level table.
    VPI Scout - $1,800 - http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo....mber=HW-SCOUT9
Another big player, the VPI Scout is VPI’s most successful turntable.
    Pro-Ject RM-9 - $1,949 - http://www.needledoctor.com/Pro-Ject...2&category=352
Comes with the Sumiko Blue Point #2 at this price, upgrade to Blue Point Special for $100 more

    Phono Preamp –
    1) entry-level sub$200

    Parasound Zphono - $150 - http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...Title_ID=14948
    Rega Mini Fono - $145 - http://www.needledoctor.com/Rega-Fon...2&category=401
    Music Hall PA1.2 - $150 - http://www.musicdirect.com/product/84099
    Pro-Ject Phono Box MKii - $159 - http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...Title_ID=13112
    Cambridge Audio 640p - $179 - http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=CA640P
    Goldring PA1 - $199 - http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MHGRPA1

    2) Intermediate Level $200~$450
    Pro-Ject Phono Box SE - $329 - http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...Title_ID=41773
    Rega Fono - $350 - http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo...umber=REFONOMM
    Clearaudio Nano - $349 - http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=CLEANANO
    Graham Slee Gram Amp 2SE - $410 - http://www.lptunes.com/Graham-Slee-G...mp-p/ga2pp.htm
The Graham is probably the best one at this level
    Creek OBH-15 - $449 - http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=OBH-15

    3) Advanced Level $500~$1000
    Clearaudio Basic Plus - $900 - http://www.elusivedisc.com/prodinfo.asp?number=CLEABASS
    PS Audio GCPH - $1,000 - http://www.musicdirect.com/product/74122
    Pro-Ject Tube Box SEII - $700 - http://store.acousticsounds.com/brow...Title_ID=41770
    Grado PH1 - $500 - http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=GRPH1

Of course there are more levels than this and I don't just mean the ridiculous $300,000 turntables, but if anyone was looking for turntables in the $3,000~$5,000 or more I'd be happy to recommend some of those too, but I imagine most of our members here would be somewhere in this range.

    Cheers!

This is some great info - thanks Doby! Just got my AT-PL120 in November so I'm gonna be sticking with that for awhile (with the cartridge/stylus upgrade you recommended yesterday), but when I decide to upgrade my table this is going to be a great reference.

Somewhat on-topic question: As someone who has always loved vinyl but is just starting to get into the new tables, stylus, etc... Why are these expensive players always so 'bare bones' looking? My PL-120 has all the DJ features, pitch control, target light, etc.. and it's a $225 table. Some of these nicer ones bascially look like nothing more than a platter stuck to a board. Is it just more expensive materials and they sacrifice extraneous bells and whistles?

Absolutely, they're going for a performance-only approach - more money spent on isolation, tonearm, platter and plinth materials, cartridges, etc.

Of course demos outside of your own listening area don't do much, but if you've got a Rega or Pro-Ject dealer with a decent auditioning area and a quiet high-end shop take one of your records down that you're familiar with and see what you think.

    Alex-

Did you purchase the new cartridge yet? I was hoping I could hold out to see if you notice a difference since I have the same setup as you (at least with the AT-PL120.

I haven't gotten it yet - waiting on the next paycheck. Definitely going to give it a shot though. I'll be sure to report back once I get it.

They finally got the name of the album right on Amazon:
    http://www.amazon.com/Big-Whiskey-Gr...096762&sr=1-37

Used to have it listed as "Goo Grux King" - no wonder the sales rank is so low.

I went ahead and bit the bullet. I'm going to have a great two-night stand of listening to my BTCS vinyl for the first time on the 1st and then BWGK on the 2nd. It's going to be a great two nights!

On another note, where exactly is everyone planning on going to get the vinyl pressing on 6/2? I know that BestBuy, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble all have it for preorder, but I want to make sure that I have it on 6/2 because I'm inviting some friends over to celebrate.

Best Buy should have it in US stores on release date.

Awesome! Throw up a post and let us know how it sounds when you get it. I'm planning on ordering one around the end of next week.

I would recommend asking your local Sunrise if they can get you a copy, they're pretty good with new release vinyl.

If you're close to Toronto then you've got Rotate This and they'll definitely get in a few copies.

I haven't seen much vinyl at my local Best Buys. Do you know if they actually plan on having it, or are you just assuming they will? Thanks!

You want to take a look online for stock with any other popular title. If they carry something like The Police - Certifiable, U2's new album, Radiohead In Rainbows, etc., then they'll usually carry new releases. Not all stores do.

What's the difference between a phono pre-amp and a 'normal' receiver/amplifier? I have my tt going into my Sony Receiver (don't know the exact model number, but it's the 800 level). Should I add a pre-amp before going into the Sony?

Does your turntable have a phono pre-amp built in or is your TT going into the PHONO input on your receiver. If it's the latter, this is how mine used to be set-up on my Onkyo TX-SR805. Once I added the phono pre-amp I changed the input to the CD (because you can't use the phono input anymore) and WOW what a difference, better frequency response and better gain, a much more accurate experience. I was already impressed with vinyl, but adding the phono made an extremely measurable difference in performance.

What phono pre-amp are you using? Right now I've got my PL-120 plugged straight to the Phono input of the TX-SR805. This is getting expensive!

Also, what kind of speakers are you using? I'm using a pair of JBL L880s.

I'm using the $150 Parasound Zphono preamp and yes the jump in performance over the built-in phono input on the TX-SR805 was amazing. It's a sweet receiver no doubt, but the expense here went into the power supply, DAC's, etc., etc., not the phono input.

I'm using a pair of Paradigm Monitor 11v5's for my fronts and a Paradigm Servo 15v2 for my sub.
