Right, "steppin out," but not that part...he's definitely not mumbling -- it's spoken through an effect...anyone?

At the 9:23 mark, my first guess is 'you gotta love someone.'

I'm positive the first 2 words are 'you got' or 'you gotta' or 'you got to' followed by something, perhaps love someone.

The first 10 seconds of Drunken Solider is the old Funny the Way It Is intro.

Probably unintentional, they're pretty common chords plus he plays them in different places for each song.

That would explain why that intro went away. Poo

I also kinda feel like it reminds me vaguely of the What You Are intro.

Agreed, everyone was jamming out. Was praying they would go right into Last Stop during the outro, but it did sound excellent nonetheless.

I love the outro to this song but it's a little bit of a buzzkill during an encore. Obviously I love the song and I appreciate that the band was willing to take such a bold step musically, but during the outro live, I feel if they cut it a little shorter and found a solid song to segue into, they'd blow everyone away

All they need to do is let Boyd fucking solo before the first verse for 5 minutes. That's literally all they need to do.

I think it will evolve! I TBI k by 2014 this will be between 17-20 minutes of just awesomeness!

And I agree about A Pie. They could do so much with this make it a nice little 8-10 minute jam session.

drunken soldier has been a good song for me to listen to since the release of Away From the World. the entire song is a good listen, though I enjoy the starting and ending of the song better than the middle.

Run with me on this: If they played the outro the way it is then started jamming with the chorus chords, it could be an awesome, slow moving and expressive into this monster of an outro.

I agree, much potential. If they don't do something different with it this summer I'll be disappointed. Although I do feel like it'll get the same complaints that LITHOG gets if they decide to expand it.

Why is this song titled Drunken Soldier? Can someone provide some insight? I know this band has some weird song names, but there's got to be a legit reason why this title is what it is.

I was wondering that myself, then last year at the Charlotte show, Dave explained... "This is a song from a father to his kid, after he's had too much to drink".

The album ends with a sprawling, epic nine-minute song called "Drunken Soldier." What's the story with that one?
My father used to say to me, "Find your bliss, and that's what you should spend your life on" -- at least, my mom always said that's what he said. He died when I was really young. I was kind of trying to say the same thing to my kids but with more words, which I'm apt to do. I have this image of a beaten-up soldier at a bar, sort of thinking about telling his kids this, more than actually being able to. And the war or whatever experience is the music in between. It almost reminds me of a '70s musical, how much stuff is going on -- it's almost over the top. It's the one that I've wrestled with the most, as far as justifying it. I love it and then every once in a while I really hate it, and that's OK. At the end, there's this image of surrender, lying on your back, whether on a battlefield or not, staring at the stars. There's a line my wife has said to me: "That's not a star; that's a satellite." I like that idea, I like that phrase, that's why I repeat it five or six times. I think it's a nice way to say goodbye.

i also didn't know the story behind the name thanks chad ^^

Drunken Soldier is good on the album, but in person LIVE this song kicks you in the face its full of twists and turns, ups and downs and emotional roller coaster of melody's.

    love this one!

Dave said in concert once that the song is basically a letter to a drunken son. I think it was in Charlotte, NC in one of the summer warm up videos. With that in mind, I always think it's funny to interpret the "that's not a star, that's a satellite" lyric to mean that when the son is out drunk at a party with women that she's probably not a star, probably a satellite. She's not a 10, she's a 6! Hahaha
