They're releasing a live 2-disc CD/DVD in October called 'Live at the Olympia' where they first played many early versions of songs from Accelerate in 2007, and lots of rarities (mostly from 80s era). If you're a fan, be sure to look out for this. A four song preview of this is on iTunes.

I don't think they're underrated at all. They're past their height of popularity in this country, as is DMB. But they are a very important part of music history, and highly regarded in the Music lexicon, so to speak. They're still huge in Europe.

I think DMB is more popular now than ever...the quality of the fan has fallen...but the volume is higher.

Nah.. late 90's / early 00's... they were everywhere, on TV, constant radio airplay ... they were selling out stadiums. They're more popular right now than they have been in recent years, but they're not near where they were back then. That's true of just about all bands.

Damn, that Olympia set list is sweet chicken...except...it's missing my favorite song from REM. I'll still probably get it.

If you're wondering...the greatest song ever written about Dan Rather.

What's The Frequency, Kenneth? is definitely one of my favorite REM songs. Absolutely love the riff.

One of my favorites from that album is Bang and Blame. The guitar work in that song is beautiful.

Not sure if you guys have seen this blog. It hasn't been active in awhile, but you can go back and see Matthew Perpetua's interpretation of just about every REM song. He's got some great insight. You can browse by album.

Accelerate is the only album not done. He says he's going to get to it someday.

    Re: R.E.M. Appreciation Thread

So I've been listening to Live at the Olympia for a week or so now, and I dig it a lot. I like how informal it feels in between songs. Stipe just talks. Talks about what the songs mean or when he wrote them or whatever. Not every song, but it gives the collection a different feel than just a live album.

Also, the songs feel pretty raw. Jacknife Lee (their producer on Accelerate) produced this collection, and this feels like old songs as if they were being prepared to be on Accelerate. Very cool.

It's certainly not a greatest hits collection either. It goes from their 80's stuff to their almost brand new stuff, not a lot of in between. Some see that as a complaint, but to me its a nice complement to their other recent live album.

Saw REM at Langerado in 08.
    Some observations:
    Sounded great
    Michael Stipe is an entertainer
    Electrlyte was a good tune
Michael Stipe is definitely into boys, but I don't judge

Minor observation - "Disguised" is actually Supernatural Superserious. I guess they went with the working title since it's an early version of that song and fairly different. It's by far the most changed new song from this performance to the Accelerate album.

My favorite band ever, phenomenal live, and Stipe is one of rock music's greatest lyricists.

I would also say that they were better for longer, in terms of the quality of their albums, then any other band.

    Murmur
    Reckoning
    Fables Of The Reconstruction
    Life's Rich Pageant
    Document
    Green
    Out Of Time
    Automatic For The People
    Monster
    New Adventures In Hi-Fi

That stretches for 10 albums and 12 years, and each one of those is stellar.
