Re: Christopher Nolan's INTERSTELLAR (11.7.14)

Lots and lots of very positive reviews are starting to creep out from early screenings. Embargo on full reviews ends early next week, excited to see what they say!

That third trailer gets me every time. It's just beautiful, and seems to sum up every over-arching theme that's been presented on this movie so far.. everything we know that is. I'm stoked.

I'm ok if someone doesn't like a director's style or something. In most cases, some people are just anti-whatever's popular.. which he certainly is. There's a lot of 'ball-washers' that just love everything he puts out just because. I think he's great.. but I go in to every movie fresh, as it's presented and judge it on that. I wasn't a big fan of TDKR after the fact, for example. I liked it, but didn't really wow me.

For me, he's earned my interest. I'll be curious to see just about anything he does. I was interested in Interstellar.. probably mores because he was directing, but the marketing has sold me on being in the theater opening weekend.

I think what I admire most about him is his process and approach. It seems unique in filmmaking today, and his films are made with a lot of care. Script first. Until that is just as he wants it, he doesn't move forward. He completes each phase and focuses on it. I think it makes the end product better. I love hearing how he works. That authenticity really brings something extra out on screen.

Some official reviews have been posted today, and as far as Rotten Tomatoes goes, there are 7 positive and 4 negative thus far, giving it a start of 64%. I'm sure that number will go up, but the early criticisms of the film are the script and the 3rd act (which typically are the criticisms of Nolan's films). Consensus across the board is that visually it's impeccable. Wondering if we'll have another house divided on movie quality vs. visuals like we did with Gravity.

    A 5-star review from Empire Magazine. http://www.empireonline.com/reviews/...asp?FID=138121

"Nolan’s starscape is the most mesmerizing visual of the year"

"this is space imagined with a dizzying immensity that would make Georges Méliès lose his shit."

"This is Nolan at his highest-functioning but also his least accessible; a film that eschews conflict for exploration, action for meditation and reflection."

"Brainy, barmy and beautiful to behold, this is Stephen Hawking’s Star Trek: a mind-bending opera of space and time with a soul wrapped up in all the science. "

The critical reviews seem to be from people that require entertainment to be force fed to them on a silver platter. I don't think that's an unfair opinion to take, but it won't hold me back from enjoying the film. I relish being forced to think while eating my popcorn.

Early reviews aren't as overwhelmingly positive as I would have expected so far, but my guess is that this movie ends up being pretty polarizing overall, probably more so than his other work.

Not that I get upset over reviews or anything, but one of the "top critics" on RT gave a fresh rating to Ouija while giving a rotten rating to Interstellar.

Other than that, the "top critics" have given much more favorable ratings to the film than the "regular" critics, although it's still a very small sample size.

Just got back from it in 70mm as well.. Just amazing. Having a hard time formulating how to put it in to words. Pretty unbelievable what Nolan accomplished here.

Saw it last night in 35mm. It's unlike anything I've ever seen. Really some amazing filmmaking. But overall as a movie, I'm not sure where I stand on it. There was a lot of good stuff, it was insanely entertaining, suspenseful, intense, etc. But it definitely had some major flaws too.
