On the front page of ask Reddit es the question 'What are signs of an experienced traveler?'

Pretty weak responses, I think the top few are: packing light, not being a complete moron going through security and some other generic stuff.

Travlleres can be some of the worst, judgemental, know-it-all people in the world, so I think it's an interesting question, what are some signs that someone is an experienced travelled?

Also, nice we don't burn the pig and peregrine in here

Dontburnthepig - still in South Africa, yeah? Done much exploring around the area? Any plans to return to the us?

Peregrine - don't think we've interacted much but I'm pretty sure you manage/work for one of the most beautiful hotels and locations in Africa. Still at the same place?

Yeah I really like it here, but might be moving on after the year is up. Will come down to whether or not I can find a job that will sponsor me, but that's going to be pretty tough it seems for a couple different reasons. Definitely glad I chose Melbourne to settle in, it's a great city. Eyes are set on Vietnam for 2018 if the Australia visa extension doesn't work out.

Think one sign of an "experienced traveler" might be the ability to take it slow and not just carve through country after country just to knock it off the list. I look back to my Europe trip and wish I had taken more time in some countries. I really want to go back to the Balkans and spend a few months in that region alone because I know I missed out on some amazing stuff.

That's a strange thing to say. You can replace the word "traveler" in that sentence with almost any other "category" of person and the sentence is just as true.

Professional athletes CAN be some of the worst, judgemental, know-it-all people in the world.

Cat ladies CAN be some of the worst, judgemental, know-it-all people in the world.

Antsmarching members CAN be some of the worst, judgemental, know-it-all people in the world.

    See?

All joking aside, I can say, empirically, that while travelers CAN be awful, judgemental, know-it-alls, they are far and away less likely to be than the majority of people out there. That said, the dickhead travelers do stand out, though. Like REALLY stand out.

I'm just checking in to this thread after a pretty long absence from AM.org in general, so I haven't a clue what your backstory is and why you're in Melbourne - but I agree: good choice. I love that city and lived there for 6 months on a work & holiday visa many years ago. Every suburb has it's own personality and flavor, there's an excellent backpacker's community, superb nightlife, and it's a perfect base to do some seriously fun outings in SE Aus (Great Ocean Road, Grampians, Phillip Island, Mornington Peninsula, Alpine NP, the outback etc., etc., etc.).

Get to Tassie if you haven't yet. Melbourne's the easiest jumping-off point, and Tasmania is f'ing rad. It's like a Australia and New Zealand had a one-night-stand and Tassie is the surprisingly awesome bastard child.

Yeah - I mean, some decent responses, but some that make no sense at all.

What? I love window seats so I can sleep easier. Also don't have to deal with fools climbing over me.

    And avoid alcohol? Lolllllllllllllllll. No.

Yeah. It can be really hit or miss.

I found what you said to be very true with a lot of the news lately. So far off base. People pretending like they're experts but at the same time - really have no idea.

Just picked this up a couple of weeks ago, and had the chance to test it out over the weekend for some flights - and at 140$ its a steal.

Patagonia Headway MLC (Maximum Legal Carry-on)
    http://www.als.com/Product.aspx?pf_id=PAT48765

Fits about 2 weeks of clothes if you know how to pack. Can carry it suitcase style, messenger bag style, or use the hideaway backpack straps. Has a sturdy laptop sleeve, organizer pocket and a slot to place it over the handle to a traditional wheelie bag. Great product for the traveler.

I'm sure it's a good bag but it's nonsensical to use the phrase MLC (the airlines have different maximum carry on allowances, so what's maximum on one airline might put you oversized on another, and be smaller than allowed on a third)

also pretty bad to not give specific measurements on the product page for something like that

My apologies I linked to the re-sellers site (where i got the deal) and not Patagonia's which does list the appropriate information

Dims are 21.5 x 6 x 15 inches and before I bought I did the research because of same skepticism.

    United: 9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches
    Delta: 22 x 14 x 9 in
    Southwest: 10 x 16 x 24 inches

and I did some international/euro LCC requirements too,but for most that may be all you care about. So far its been allowable for everything I looked up. There is also no metal/internal cage so as long as you can stuff it into there required box at check-in you are good to go, and this is very compressible.

All in all, just wanted to recommend the product, as I am finding it superbly useful.

nice. for a while there airlines changed their maximum sized bag seemingly monthly, and always sold a branded bag that corresponded to the new limits. pretty shady if you ask me; they don't do that anymore as far as I'm aware of

The bag does look dope as fuck. I don't really have a need for it, but if I do I'm definitely keeping it in mind.

It's a hell of a city. Never boring. I'm on a work holiday as well. Lived in Fitzroy for a bit but didn't really like my house (I jumped the gun on moving in) so moved to a spot in South Melbourne and love it. Tasmania is definitely in the cards, think I can do 4 or 5 days there towards the end of the year. Might even do that right before NZ.

I'm literally in the area for only a few hours (driving by on the way to the airport). Really busting my bump to even just step foot in it. I'll be there in August. I'm trying to catch the sunrise at Lake Butte Overlook, mostly Bc from what I can see, I can do it all via a car.

My sister's in Shanghai for a few days then heads down to Beijing on Sunday for another two or three days and is complaining about how she sticks out like a sore thumb

That brings me to a thought: It's so interesting how some major metropolises are these giant melting pots (NYC, London...) where there's people from literally every walk of life and nationality and religion (rough estimates are 40% of NYC's population was born outside the US) and then there's places like Shanghai where that number is estimated to be 1.2%.

So I'm half toying with idea of taking a month or two off work to start 2018. Thinking of staying in one place, renting a condo or house. I'm not poverty stricken but not looking for expensive luxury either. Thoughts? Maybe Costa Rica.
Extra important piece of info, there would be a 2.5 year old kid involved so trekking the Himalaya or something isn't quite what I'm looking for.

Yeah. I guess... .? Just a half baked idea at this point. Going to be a crazy stressful year at work (already is) and I live in a winter city so nice to escape in the coldest months. Mostly chill, run and bike and surf and fish or whatever. I've been to Costa Rica a couple of times so it would be in the running but not set on anything, assuming this even happens.

Yeah sounds like a good idea. Could also consider Spain or Portugal.

edit: Australia too would be amazing for the biking/hiking/surfing, but certainly more expensive than the other options.
