Creative Marriage Proposals

So one of my good friends from college who played on NC State's basketball team proposed to his girlfriend in a really awesome way:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l3c9...ature=youtu.be

Another personal favorite of mine is the dude that took his girl to the movies and made a fake trailer for it:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnVAE91E7kM

This got me thinking about what others do for proposals and if anyone has any cool stories to share.

I actually just proposed this past tuesday while we were in Mexico. Bought the ring back in March and she had no idea I had it for so long. Faked her out a few times then finally did it in Tulum on top of the cliff next to one of the ruins overlooking the ocean. Beautiful scene. Picture is tiny, but it was awesome.

I followed her around the apartment for 10 mins, then said "here" and gave her the box with the ring in it. To this day we are not 100% sure I even proposed but we still ended up married...

It doesn't get much more creative than proposing when Jaws pops out of the water.

Anything involving props or extras is all about the guy trying to feel good about himself and get attention. If you love her and want to marry her, ask her. In Mexico is great. On a jumbotron or with a skywriting plane, you're a tool.

I hope my future wife won't expect something like that...no way I'm proposing in public with many shennanigans. I want it to be a personal, private, meaningful moment.

That's what ours was. My daughter and I went on a walk with her (I was a single dad), I did the one knee proposal and my daughter gave her the ring. It was more of a family moment than a "look at us" moment.

OP's video is great. A lot of the ones on YT are incredibly douchey. The part at like 4:40 on here is real fucking classy though.

That's cool. I'm a little older so we had a "Nancies" marriage, though the kids were born on Ants, at least one of them was. I was only lurking when the oldest was born.

As for my proposal, it was 5-15-03 and it was nothing crazy. I tricked her into thinking I was leaving early to play golf but instead went to the diamond district in Manhattan to pick out her ring and have it made that morning.

She worked the 11-8 shift so I had lots of time to get the condo ready when I got back. I had the candlelight dinner going with balloons all over and rose pedals leading her from the garage door to the dining room where I was waiting. DMB's Crash (her favorite song at the time and the song that got her into the band) started as she walked in. I got to my knee and got through 75% of my little speech before losing my shit. We had short cry together, had a blazing meal and did what Thom Hudson referenced. I remember it all like it was yesterday.

Yeah, I don't really have a problem with that. If you want to get attention, get attention. This is America for God's sake.

    Re: Creative Marriage Proposals

Mine's gonna sound a little sappy but it was private and intimate. And I got mad props from all our friends

Left work to meet her father for lunch and ask for his blessing, which he enjoyed.

Headed back home, went to a park near where we lived and found a small footbridge in the woods not far from the road. Wrapped the railings with some white twinkle lights and headed home.

We went out for "errands", and half a mile away, I acted like I forgot something and pulled over. She was confused, then I pulled out a blindfold and told her to put it on. She basically knew what I was up to at this point (had been expecting the question some day soon but didn't know how or when). I put on a playlist, drove to Starbucks to grab a hot chocolate for us. Drove towards the park while we talked about our first dates and how I'd just had lunch with her dad that day. Got to the park and I had to back my car up to within like 25' of the bridge -- a tight fit between a little pavillion and some outdoor grills - so that the extension cord would reach the lights I'd put out. Plugged those in, scattered some rose petals (shape of a heart of course) and some small candles. Gave her some chocolate covered strawberries and walked her back to the bridge. Stood her in front of the heart of flowers while I got down on one knee inside the heart and told her to take off the blindfold. Bam.

the best part was how Starbucks didn't have a drive-thru and I had to run in. She was like uhh is it gonna look weird that I'm sitting in this car alone, blindfolded? I assured her I'd parked off in a corner no one would walk by.

Also we're only talking like 2 miles from Starbucks to the park. It was maybe 20 min total.

I in no way wanted it with people around, and I know she didnt either. I lucked out and found a secluded spot and asked. Didnt get down on a knee or anything, just pulled the ring out of my backpack and asked.

Agree completely. My proposal story: We went out to her folk's house for dinner so I could clear it with her dad, as we were going to bed later that night (literally she was already under the covers) I took the ring box out of my hoodie pocket and climbed in bed next to her and just asked.

I think stuff like what Bradshaw did (asking on vacation in front of a scenic or romantic setting) is fine but making a big flashy public show of it just screams "hey look how much of a douchebag I am"

The only thing I think is lame is sporting event jumbotron type proposals. Unless that's like a major part of your relationship like how you met is somehow related or the sport is both the guy's and girl's life.

I had the ring in my pocket from the time I picked it up until that night when we were watching tv on the couch. I literally took it out, opened it and said, "Hey, wanna get married?" She laughed and said yes and then made me get down on one knee and ask again.

    Re: Creative Marriage Proposals

I do graphic design from time to time and was working in the printing industry at the time. So I went through both our computers and Facebook accounts and put together a really cool book of pictures documenting our entire relationship up to that point (at that time I think it was 6 years). It came out really nice. My original plan was to take her to the park we loved taking our dog to at the time and sitting her down in a nice secluded section I picked out right by the pond. I would then have her read through the book and the last page said something like "and all of this has brought us to this day" followed by a picture of the spot I picked out and the date I planned to do it (which was a Saturday).

Well, plans changed. I picked the ring up on a Tuesday and hid it in the attic. The next day I went to work, where we had been having internet connection issues, and after a few hours of work we lost connection. My boss told us to go work from home. It just so happened to be a beautiful day and when I told my wife I was heading home she suggested I ride up with her to UNH where she was taking classes at the time, wait for her class to get out and then we'd take the dog to the beach. As it turned out the forecast for Saturday (the original planned outdoor proposal date) was rain and about 45 degrees. So I pulled an audible and snuck upstairs when I got home, ripped out the page with the Saturday date and picture of the spot I picked out to propose, and filled in the blank page (I planned an extra page in case plans changed) with that day's date.

She got out of class and we rode to the beach where we played with the dog for a bit and I snapped some pre-proposal pics, which was fun since she had no idea what was coming. I eventually called her over and sat with her in a couple beach chairs while she read through the book. She got to the last page and read "and all this has brought us to this day" while I grabbed the ring, got down on one knee and asked her. I'll never forget that moment as long as I live. It all came together perfectly and her reaction was priceless.

If I can suggest anything to anyone planning to propose - just do it from the heart. I put a lot of thought and time and it made for an incredibly special moment. I toyed with the idea of doing something with our friends and family because we're so close to all of them, but in the end it was so much better just the two of us. Also, if you can do it without her knowing or suspecting it, that will make for an incredible moment. She had absolutely no idea I was even planning to propose any time soon. She was clueless. I thought she'd get half way through the book and figure it out, but she honestly had no idea until I pulled the box out. Amazing moment that we'll never forget. The book I made is displayed on our coffee table now :-)
