I thought the Sox had a large fan base? Your thread is barely 3 pages! Check out our Phillies thread. Blows you guys away.

Yes, because John Henry and company really wanted to trade Babe Ruth. They wouldn't have traded him not because he was the home run king but his on base percentage has to be nasty. If it wasn't, it doesn't matter how many home runs you hit, its how you get on base. If anyone listens to WEEI, I believe on the Big Show yesterday, Tony Massorotti said, that home runs are overrated, he could be right or he could be wrong.

mike maroth and kerry wood are my 2 favorite players. mike maroth pitched a complete game, shutout, 1 hitter against the yankees tonight. best game of his career and i was at the game. what a great game to see him pitch live for the first time, eh?

Besides, they don't seem so overrated right now, as Ortiz just homered to put the Sox ahead 3-1

I do understand the argument that OBP is more important than slugging percentage, though, and there's probably something to that (though I'm not convinced a point of OBP is worth 3x more than slugging, as Moneyball argues)

I agree with you on that one, he shouldn't have wrote about what was on SOSH but Schilling should also know that media people are sneaky and will do whatever they can to get a story. Now the red sox just need to get on a good streak on the road, and nothing like a horrific seattle team to start against.

talk to the drunken redneck owner of the Rangers. Then talk to George and see how he got A-Rod for a hell of a price.

And then talk to the Red Sox owner whose not even a fan of the team. So, why should he care if the Red Sox win or not. He just cares about the money. Atleast George is willing to spend his own money to see his favorite team win.

I agree that all that george cares about is his team winning. And I will admit that anyone would want their favorite team's ower to do all he could to win. But i know you will not find anyone outside of yankee's fans that think what they are doing is good for the game of baseball.

oh yeah, i know that. That's just unfortunate. Because it actually is good for the game. If it wasn't for the Yankees, attendance sales would be down, merchandise sales would be down, and baseball wouldn't be baseball. Not to mention baseball ratings.

Without the yankees, baseball is just not the same.

To be fair, I think this could be said about any team. Baseball wouldn't be baseball to me without the Sox and the Orioles. My father would say the same about the Tigers, and my brother would most likely say the same thing about the A's. It's a relative statement.

of course, all of the teams that have a part in baseball history are important to baseball.

But, in today's baseball world, baseball needs the yankees.

Baseball needs the Yankees as much as they need the Red Sox or any other original team, I think they could do without expansion teams no offense to any fans of those teams.

I believe baseball needs the Red Sox and Yankees equally. They are such an amazing rival that if one of them disapeared, baseball would not be the same. The Yankees are important because they are the big bad team that wins all the time... and you either like them or completely hate them. The Red Sox are equally important for their inability to capture a championship. Their fan base is so powerful and loyal its quite amazing. Have you ever been near Fenway Park during a Yankees and Red Sox game? The Red Sox brings a fanbase that has an unmatched passion for the game. Casual viewers of baseball cannot help but be intrigued by the team who's history mirrors a story book. It is interesting when the Yankees compete for the Series because well... they are the Yankees. But everytime the Red Sox get close, baseball pulls in viewers that may not normally watch. Its kind of like the classic movie scene where the hero is getting horribly abused, but he keeps standing up only to get another punch/kick. It hurts, but you keep watching, because you know that sometime the hero is finally going to duck the punch and land one of his own. Do you prefer the hero that dodges every bullet and always wins or the hero that gets smashed down most of the movie but comes back with a triumphant ending? Thats the decision between the Sox and Yankees

Keith Foulke, I want to go to sleep why did you have to blow like your 3rd straight save, I thought you were a machine. Hopefully, the Sox can win this game but it seems like they can never win extra innings games on the road.

fenway park is full of mostly corporate fans. it's so difficult to snatch a ticket from any one of the fortune 500 companies that have a plot behind right field in fenway.
comparatively, yankees stadium has more pinstripe-bleeding fans that know more about baseball than you could imagine.

    Re: Boston Red Sox

When Arroyo is on the mound, I feel the sox could play a good game. I think of him as the #3 starter.

    Re: Boston Red Sox

i like how the red sox fans always complain that the yankees have too much money. if the red sox were as good as they brag that they are shouldn't they be able to beat the money team. it can be done. look at the lakers. i think the sox fans just whine to make up for the fact that they just can't cut it.

It's not just Bosox fans, it's all of the rest of baseball. Like I said, I'd rather watch a team with heart than a bunch of pretty boy buy offs any day.
