hmm last i checked the government had absolutely nothing to do with this and though they are a private company they are subsidiary or the NFL and if they were told to change their name the decision would come from them. have you read 1984? a company having public, non government pressure on it to change its name because some people find it racist really isn't covered.

The government is pressuring the NFL to publicly say the Redskins should change their name. Some congress people wrote Goodell saying they could threaten their tax status or something if they didn't come out and say that Snyder should change the name. So there is a couple politicians with nothing better to do trying to force people's hands to get the name change.

That's not going to happen. Also, individual Congresspeople are allowed to hold and voice opinions — they're people, too — but until that translates to actual laws being passed, it isn't government oppression.

I agree they can have opinions but I find it incredibly offensive that they think changing a sports team name is any of their business in the first place. Much less when they have so much other important stuff to focus on.

To the first, personally I see many similarities considering the blackhawks were warriors. I would also point out that during the war of 1812 the blackhawk nation under chief black hawk sided with the british (objectively speaking I get why they would pick that side) and that offends me as an American.

To the second, the logo change that photo demonstrates is absurd, sort of a wimpy looking logo. If anything change the name to the 'Code talkers' (Navaho tribe members who fought in the pacific during WW2) and keep the existing logo!

I would disagree 100% here. While he may not be as quick to respond to superfluous controversial topics he certainly does when he is passionate about something. He is intelligent, makes comments that cause me to dig a bit deeper and when he does feel obliged to post only a fool would ignore his words. You also know that you and I have been involved in many controversial topics so I think I am being completely objective here by saying this.

Honestly I see both sides of this argument. Do I really care about the term "Redskins"? No. I've discussed this with my sister and neither of us get bent out of shape over things like this. However I know a lot of people who are offended easily by any slight and many of them picketed when the Redskins came to Green Bay. I understand how they feel.

Like TwoStep mentioned earlier, I know Richie Plass and I've heard some of his stories about how he was treated. I would not hold it against anyone for being upset about it.

exactly...then, factor in the genocide and stuff, and it should just be as much of a non issue to pick a new mascot..seriously, if one person was still offended by the genocide(repeated here for emphasis) and using the people as a mascot, imo, they should be respected at the expense of stubborn, self righteous sports fans who are taking their PC stand here...it just seems so ridiculous. But, Americans are SERIOUSLY in the dark when it comes to empathy and the scope of some atrocities on our hands.
