In what way is his belief in redistribution a revelation? He's never not owned that. The video you're talking about isn't a smoking gun being hidden by the media. It's a statement made years ago that he's not ever hidden from.

More to the point, it's a Romney campaign misdirection. It's not new or a revelation. They need something to bounce around the echo chamber to suck eyes and ears away from Romney's disparagement of half the population, many of whom are (or maybe now, were) his own supporters.

The problem with what he said is that the number (47%) is correct, but his addendum that those 47% are gov't teat suckers is way off. As has been detailed a thousand other places (including many times in this thread), a huge number of that 47% aren't welfare people, they are retirees, students, veterans, families who work but get child tax credits. None of those people refuse to accept responsibility for their own lives. That's where he fucked up.

This is not some left wing conspiracy. Scores of republicans are horrified by his statement and are running as far away from him as possible.

repubs keep repeating that phrase to make themselves feel comfortable in their candidate - but it wasn't even close to being the salient takeaway.

Did you know that the Earned Income Tax Credit was greatly expanded by President Reagan in the mid-1980s to give money back to low-income workers to increase their incentive to work and that the Bush-era tax cuts erased the income tax for 7.8 million families by lowering rates and doubling the child tax credit?

Redistribution is as redistribution does, I guess.

Which of the people who make up the 47% who don't pay income taxes are you referring to specifically? Low income workers, active service members, retired seniors, students, or millionaires with good accountants?

I don't see what he said that's so controversial as it relates to his platform. What he said isn't good, but it's no smoking gun either. I'm sure any politician speaks differently behind closed doors, which this was intended to be. Clandestinely taping a candidate and releasing it publicly doesn't really say good things about the guy who captured this.

I agree with all of this but the last part. The dude can do what he wants. The part about politicians speaking different behind closed doors I'm sure you are right and that's my biggest complaint about politics. Just fucking be a straight shooter. Tell me what you really think about the country and what you think the best way is to fix it and how you think you will do it. This goes for both sides. Who are you going to represent? Are you gonna be the buy behind closed doors to rich conservatives or liberals or the guy(s) talking to the camera. We'll never get that but it would be nice.

It has nothing to do with anything. It's an excuse to dismiss what is an embarrassing insight into Romney's thinking and his worldview.

Joe the plumber engaged the Obama. Obama said he is into wealth redistribution. Obama was judged for that by those who wanted to judge him for that. The incidentals about Joe the plumber didn't detract from the comments Obama made. After it was revealed the Joe the plumber wasn't shooting as straight as he claimed (i.e. he wasn't buying a business, or in the position to buy a business or whatever the hell it was) people jumped on Joe. That doesn't diminish the number of votes lost by Obama from his initial statement, despite how someone wants to spin it now.

There's something really sad going on with the righties in this forum lately. I'm not criticizing or name calling, just observing the sadness in their posts - a desparation to find a conspiracy to ruin a good man rather than an admission that Romney is a shitty candidate.

Romney's a shitty candidate. Kerry was a shitty candidate. McCain was a shitty candidate. Dole was a shitty candidate. Dukakis and Mondale were shitty candidates. Often a shitty candidate is the nominee. It's okay to admit it. It makes the loss easier to understand and leaves you with less rage.

Obama's not a great President. I'll admit it. There's no conspiracy to make it seem he's not a great President. He just isn't. There's crazy people who say crazy shit about him, but that doesn't make him a bad leader. He owns that.
