Re: Is Alpine coming back?

16 Dave Matthews Band
FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island
Chicago, Ill. July 4-5, 2014
$2,741,529 52,202 / 52,202 2 / 2

25 Dave Matthews Band
Summerfest- Marcus Amphitheater
Milwaukee, Wis. July 2, 2014
$1,479,644 22,595 / 23,086 1 / 0

----------------------------------------------

I think looking at the Summerfest numbers alone tells you they will be doing Summerfest over Alpine, if it's all about the numbers. The Summerfest numbers are 2x that of many of the other one night stops on the tour! They are not going to do 3 Milwaukee shows.

Are those numbers analytical enough?

I love going to Alpine and would MUCH rather go there than NI (and I live downtown Chicago) but unfortunately we all know it's about the $$

My heart wants Alpine so badly, but my (uniformed) head doubts it will happen.

Nothing like a magical two-night stand at Alpine, with both shows in the 2:40 to 2:50 range (song time).

Been to both know. Both are great. Alpine IS more epic. I enjoyed DC 2014 more than Alpine 2012.

Was at both of these weekends, and that's crazy talk. Alpine 2012 was the best 2-night stand this band has done since at least 2008.

I've been to Alpine every year since 2003. It's a 5 hour drive from Minneapolis. No Alpine in 2014 meant no DMB for me in 2014 because I wasn't going to drive 5 hours to go to Summerfest nor 6 hours to go to NI in Chicago. I miss Alpine a lot.

I live in the Loop in Chicago, and wouldn't go to NI. The only places I'll still see this band are Alpine, Red Rocks, Gorge, or a small indoor venue (i.e. Radio City, Chicago Theatre, Ryman, etc.)

    Re: Is Alpine coming back?

I haven't seen the summer tour numbers anywhere, but I'm assuming they grossed more than 2013 in general? I think you have to remember that, if that's the case, a lot of it probably has to do with the whole "A Very Special Evening" concept. And that's part of the reason why I think Alpine will return at some point. Maybe not in the immediate future, but in a few years.

When a band that hasn't changed the way they tour in two decades resorts to a gimmick, it's a clear sign that they're losing steam from both a creative/touring standpoint and from a financial standpoint.

If fewer and fewer people go to see shows, they're going to cut back on the number of shows eventually. At that point, at least in my opinion, it makes much more sense to play venues with larger capacities.

So the venue where they play has no bearing on the quality of the experience? That's certainly an interesting opinion.

Obviously people care, It's apparent you don't because you live in the East coast. They get a shit ton of shows. The venue does matter. Summerfest was alright, but both that and NI sucked compared to Alpine.

As for Wrigley, that was announced the weekend of Alpine in 2010. There's a reason for that. Wrigley is whole different animal as it's a "special" venue with people around the country to flock too.

And I'll have to disagree about the birth of two sets breathing life into the fanbase for 2-3 years. 1 year...maybe for some? Diehards...none.

It comes down to $ and maybe some other factors that none of us know.

    See you at SPAC.
plus lets not forget that in 2010, they announced they were taking the next year off. when they announced wrigley, there was no fall tour or caravan announced. we didnt know for sure if wrigley was their last show for awhile. that definitely increased demand. plus BW got way more press than the last album.

so, yea, implying that DMBs demand in 2010 is the same as now is totally crazy.

2sets breathing life into the fan base for 2-3 years... Missed that gem.

What fire it breathed into the fan base didn't even last through the 2sets tour, much less years beyond it.

They're not a nostalgia act. They don't play their greatest hits/best shit night in and night out. That said I would be totally fine of that's what they became at this point. Would save so much time/money

    Re: Is Alpine coming back?

I think whether Alpine continues to hold concerts goes far beyond DMB. While they're one of the most consistent acts to play there, it takes far more than one weekend a year to keep a venue that size viable. There are very few bands that can sell over 35,000 tickets a night consistently and most that can (U2, Stones, some country acts) already play stadiums when they tour.

The other issue is that NI is now a viable large venue right in Chicago, and while most of what I've heard about it has been fairly negative unless you're in the front the numbers don't lie - DMB drew very poorly at Alpine in 2013 but sold out two nights at NI this summer. I have to imagine that some other bands had similar experiences.

Yup was at Chicago. Then alpine 2013. Was very turned off of dmb for a long time. Ironically I saw the most shows I've ever seen in a summer though

Always wanted to do gorge at least once, was able to make it work this year
