James Gunn's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY For Marvel (8.1.14)

Alright word is this thing officially starts shooting next month so I'm going ahead with a thread for it, even up until about a year ago with all the success of the Marvel universe I'd barely heard of this property, but I'm really pumped for it now.

It's pretty much set to be the single biggest movie of Marvel's Phase II that would still be before The Avengers 2 comes along in 2015. What especially intrigues me is they'll be fully embracing the whole alien/magical/supernatural end of their whole "realistic universe" of what they've been building by the time GOTG comes out. Plus the cast they've been assembling just kicks ass.

Chris Pratt as Peter Quill ala The Star-Lord just has me giddy, Zoe Saldana the primary female lead of the team, Michael Rooker, John C. Reilly as the sort of Guardians' version of the Agent Coulson character, and Glenn Close of all people was announced a few days ago. But the newest news I just heard tonight was Karen Gillan aka the unbelievably hot redhead Doctor Who companion Amy Pond, she it seems be playing one of the villains.

btw here's a piece of concept art of the team if you've got absolutely no clue on who/what this is. As I understand it, in the Marvel world think of them as much more space/magic/etc version of The Avengers, they're a team.

part of me's soooo hoping Nick Offerman winds up voicing the Racoon character.

I was reading all about it this morning but only now felt motivated to look for pictures.

    I'm excited though.

Did they say if Iron Man would be on this team, or if they were going a new direction with the story?

Nevermind, just saw the cast list.

Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer, Lee Pace as Ronan the Accuser, Michael Rooker as Yondu, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Djimon Hounsou as Korath, Benicio del Toro as The Collector, John C. Reilly as Rhomann Dey, and Glenn Close as Nova Prime.

    This will be interesting.

I still bet Tony Stark will make some kind of cameo or appearance or allusion to him.

That's right, I heard about Diesel a few days ago. I'm still really holding out hope Nick Offerman voices the raccoon.

Those stills and snippets are awesome. I feel like this movie is going to be a whole other animal when it comes to what we're used to seeing in the Marvel Universe. Probably the most excited I've been for a Marvel movie so far, actually.

I can't get over the cast. It's so bizarre and odd, but it feels right somehow. Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Yea I was pretty surprised to read this. I really dig Cooper, but honestly he doesn't really seem to have all that distinctive of a voice. Like for one thing if you'd told me up front that Bradley Cooper was going to be in the cast for this but I didn't know about any roles, I'd naturally assume he was playing Peter Quill. He's a pretty unconventional choice. But I've really wanted Nick Offerman to get it for a long time now.

Kevin Feige giving us some further info on story here. http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansit.../news/?a=85853

-GOTG takes place roughly the same time frame on Earth (and Asgard) as Iron Man 3, Thor 2 and Capt America 2.

-Thanos will have an actual, much-more-so-than-just-cameo role, but he's still not the main attraction, just supporting

-Ronan The Accuser (Lee Pace) is basically the lead villain.

So do they operate in the Avenger world? Is there a chance of a team up? Or are the Guardians their own separate thing with no affiliation to the Avengers?

well they are in so far as, the Guardians are very much a part of this "Marvel Cinematic Universe", where everything takes place technically in the same overall narrative. For instance according to some character stuff I've read, the one villain role that Karen Gillan is playing called Nebula, she's Thanos' granddaughter, the guy teased at the end of the Avengers, he'll be in this movie and I would guess will be the main villain in The Avengers 3. I do believe there are some storylines in the comics where the Guardians have joined up with some or all of the members of The Avengers (keeping in mind that the team designated as the "Avengers" is way bigger than what was in Whedon's film, I think virtually someone/thing from virtually ever Marvel property has been with them at one point or another, including Spiderman and some different X-Men).

If they all ever team up directly in a movie I suppose would largely depend on how successful this all continues to be. This is by far the most non-mainstream and risky thing that Marvel's done now since starting this whole project in 2008. While I don't think it will, GOTG could potentially be a massive failure and flop.

Interesting thanks. Everything I've learned about the Marvel universe I've learned from the movies. I was always a DC fan...man was I missing out haha. I wish DC could have the same success with their universe but I have my doubts about their current model. The Batman/Superman team up in the first Superman sequel wreaks of desperation to match Marvel.

I remember when Iron Man came out I had no desire to see it. Then my dad wanted to see a movie so we said, ah what the hell? We'll see Iron Man...so glad we did. I've loved every movie since. So while the Guardians seems a bit obscure for my taste but Marvel has just been so solid.

Hey I could pretty much say the same thing for myself, I've never read a single actual comic in my life, but I like most comic book based movies. And then I've wound up just also reading other certain background stuff about the properties over the years, the deeper the different movies get made. Iron Man I think there's no question wound up being a surprise success to the degree it was. Most of the mainstream public was unfamiliar with him. Actually Tom Cruise had been at the lead of wanting to make an IM movie for many years, obviously with himself in mind as Stark. Though I'm not sure exactly what transpired to have what he was doing be phased out and Favreau get a hold of it and then heavily advocating for RDJ to get the role. Which he very much had to do, recall this was still when he had a fairly shaky reputation, Iron Man was just the beginning of him becoming one of the biggest stars in the world.

I started getting into the Marvel Universe when the Ultimate Alliance games were coming out for XBox. The movies also made me a fan back in the day. I'm not too familiar with the Guardians, though I've heard of them. But this is a Marvel movie, has ties to the Avengers and I know Marvel will kick ass with it. I'm pumped

I was kinda hoping Bradley Cooper could be Dr. Strange...I suppose he still can if he's only doing the voice.

Hopefully he knocks it out of the park. Out of all names, I don't think I ever would have thought of him for Rocket. But...who knows.

though I hate these teasers FOR a friggin teaser, it's so ridiculous. I wouldn't be surprised if after awhile it'll then be the first 5 seconds of the 15 second teaser on the day before.
