Re: The Travellers Thread

That whole part of the country is foreign to me. Went to rhode island for a few days about 20 years ago, but thats it for me in the north east. Someday id like to visit. Seems like itd be nice in fall.

One of my buddies just started the appalachian trail. I think that would be pretty cool, or at least do part of it. Or maybe pacific coast trail.

AT has always been a dream of mine. would LOVE to do it.

the NE is perfect in the fall. warm days, cool nights, lots of sun, amazing foliage if you time it right... first weekend of October I go camping up north and it's never been worse than "good". It gets cold at night, I think one year it got down into the high 20's in the tent, but during the days it got back up to around 60. dream weather.

What's everyone's favorite "travel" book? I've heard good things about The Alchemist, but it was checked out when I went to the library the other day. Picked up In A Sunburned Country instead. About the author traveling through Australia. Figured it would be a fun read to get myself geared up for the move.

I also know the same author wrote a book on his journey on the Appalachian Trail. It's called A Walk In The Woods. Sounds like a couple of you might be interested in that.

    Re: The Travellers Thread

I mean, I like Paulo but I know a lot of people don't. I liked the alchemist but I liked his first book better called the pilgrimage. Shantaram is another traveller classic but it's a huge book at 1,000 pages. Well worth it though, fantastic read. If you've been to Bolivia or South America or just enjoy a fun, crazy drug and prison style story there is a good short book based on a true story called marching powder. Haven't read any Bill Bryson but lots of people I know enjoy his writing. Heard about the Appalachian trail book and I'm intruiged but that's all I got on that. I read fear and loathing on the '72 campaign trail during one trip and really enjoyed it. I've heard from a few people that they liked the great railway bazaar by Paul Theroux. On my list is the sun also rises by Hemingway. Just read a review about wild coast about South America by gimlette.

So many good books out there, is there any particular country continent that intruiges you because sometimes it's easy to narrow it down like that. I also like to read biographies and historical books when traveling because usually they have fascinating characters and details about a different time and place which feeds to travel bug. I read a history of the cia and biography of Che Guevara on some travels. Maybe something along those lines.

Decide if you want to read a classic, lesser known 1st hand adventure style stories from someone who travelled a specific region/continent or just something that pairs well with travel like an interesting person or time from history.

No, not necessarily a particular region but Southeast Asian history really interests me, as well as Balkan history, whether it be WWI or the Yugoslav wars. Thanks for the suggestions.

On that note, I highly recommend First They Killed My Father which is a first-hand account of a survivor of the Cambodian genocide. Crazy stuff. I actually bought it in Siam Reap and read while there and Phnom Penh. Fucking hell

Into The Woods was real good, although not a "travel" book.

I want to ask veterans around here a question and no idea if you'll have the answer but figured this is as good a place as any. So we're planning on Disney World in April and I know it's a much busier time to travel so it would be more money so I get that. But we are looking at April 1st - 8th and flights from Detroit to there round trip is $1300 per person that week. however, Easter Week it's like $550 a person. Anyone have any idea why it would be THAT much more money? It's cheaper to travel there at Christmas.

Spring break was my thought but more than twice as much as Easter seems excessive cause schools have spring break then too and easter week is when Disney's prices were higher. Easter week I pay 550 a person but first week of April is 1300? Hell I can go Christmas week for $800. That's why $1300 seems high to me. I've been looking at all airlines. The $'s I'm using is Delta cause currently they are the only non stop from Detroit. Even other airlines are high with a layover or more.

not sure why you just wouldn't fly American/United for ~$550 and connect if you're carrier independent.

looks like there are only K+ fare buckets available for Delta, there's (partially) your reason.

    https://www.delta.com/content/www/en...ith-delta.html

edit: the $1300+ fares are B fares. almost unrestricted economy. cheers

I have and it's not much better. You're talking a few hundred dollars less and either a really early flight, 30 minute layover or 3 hour layover and none of those sound good for me with a 6 year old. I'll give it time and see if the prices (across the board) come down any and then make the decision.

you can actually fly discounted first class (PAG fares) for cheaper than the prices quoted (~$1100)

not sure why the deep discounted economy fares aren't open, but if you want direct, I'd book the PAG over a K/B combo if nothing changes.

I was supposed to go to Hungary this weekend, but I couldn't get the time off. I'll probably go later this summer when I can find coverage for work.

Other than that just the gorge.

I did fly in the copilot seat of a 402c last weekend from Boston to Nantucket, that was super cool. I was friends with the captain and he nudged me an pointed out a JetBlue jet making flying the same route that passed us in air. Pretty rad experience all around.

Its the nicest airport I have ever been in. You almost certainty will have a long layover with Qatar Airlines. If you talk the them they will put you up in the airport hotel which is beautiful as well.

Brand new, massive hallways, and all around ease to pass through. All restaurants are pretty high end and its not terrible food.

    Here are some pics.

Forgot to mention the only downside is the airport is freaking huge. It can be a long walk between gates. I think I walked for 30 minutes to my gate during my transfer. This was without any lines or traffic. Just expansive walking I think its because its setup for the whole terminal to be able to accept A380s and the 777x when it comes out.
