Vic Firth is only selling his signature sticks without the VicGrip from this point forward(unless you know of somewhere else I can purchase them).

Do you know if Carter will still be using the sticks with VicGrip, or will he be switching to the natural finish, as well?

From Vic Firth's website:
Carter Beauford
Signature Sticks
Combines a 5B shaft with an extended taper and elongated oval wood tip. The result is a design that provides superior response, sound and versatility. In close collaboration with Carter Beauford, our newly updated 2017 version of the original SBEA is now offered without the added Vic Grip coating.

I asked Henry a few weeks back but no reply yet.

Also, I started using DWs new machined pedals. I recommended them to Henry last summer and st the jazz festival gig, Henry had them up for Carter. Pretty cool to see him using them and taking recommendations!

I also wonder if he requested the no grip or did vic firth just remove it all together?

He went on and on about it with how them and the gloves work together. Could be marketing bs but still.

Yeah, I was wondering this myself.

I really love the balance, the bead, and the durability of these sticks. I hope they continue to sell these for awhile. I didn't like his Pro-Mark signatures at all.

    Thanks for your quick response!

Hey guys I've had a lot of pm's and Facebook questions regarding my Carter Beauford Replica Kit. I thought I'd finally upload a quick video tour.*

I keep the kit setup at my church because it's the only place I have to store it and practice. I use it for our worship services and everyone loves it, but I don't use every piece of course.*

It only gets moved nowadays for Dave Matthews Tribute Band gigs as I have my own original kit for my band.*

    Thanks and here's the link!*

Does anyone help you break that down at the end of the night? I use a very simple set-up, and my motivation isn't there at the end of the night.

Usually some of the band members help carry the bags and hardware to my vehicle. If my wife goes, she does as well. It's definitely the worst part of the gig.

Do you know if he's using direct drive or chain? It looks like DW only offers the hi-hat stand in direct drive. The pedals have both options.

He was using the direct drive. I ended up hating them and moved to the chain version. Much better feel. However it looks like Carter moved back to the 9000 doubles. He probably didn't like the direct feel either.

I'll ask Henry if I see him in a few weeks. He may not know they have a chain double. It's adjustments are so much easier to make than on the 9ks.

Same, those are some nice pedals. I rock the chain double and direct HH too.

    Another discussion:

What kind of gear did Carter use for the first couple years with the band? At least up until 1994 but through 97 would be even better. Mostly interested in cymbal & accessory choice. I’m sure if he had the opportunity he’d have played the RC from day one.

Do we have any resources for this kind of research?

I’ve been going through any old videos I can get a good look at models. At some point he used an EAK for his large crash, and later I’ve noticed an IAK in its spot. What were his early China’s? EAK Chinaboy? Then to the K Chinaboy high/low? Later I see info he used both 20/22” Oriental Classic Chinas.

Any claims of his gear should be backed up with evidence cited or a picture.

For those of you that aren’t drummers, generally if you noticed his cymbal has a large “K” underneath it’s an EAK. A few years later the cymbals had “Zildjian” below. With close up pics you can see the lathing which can help identification.

    Re: Carter Beauford

For triggers, I'm pretty sure that started in 05 with Stand Up.

I believe in the studio for Crash for sure, he used a Yamaha Maple Custom I believe. It was the same green kit I believe that was used at Woodstock. Not sure about previous models.

For cymbals, his old eaks were a 20" K Thin, 18" K thin or medium thin, and then the 14" K. The back crash was usually an 18" Oriental Trash Crash, 18" Azuka Timbale cymbal, 18" K, or 18" A custom. It rotated so often it was hard to keep up. You can tell the oriental and Azuka though by the red lettering in old photos.

Chinas were the 19" K China, 18/20" Oriental China Trash on top stack, with the 20" and 22" Classic Chinas rotating on the bottom. Folsom Field I know was the 20" trash over 22" classic.

I wish I knew what exact old K ride it was he used before the long years of the a custom projection ride. That thing was beautiful, especially on the drumming DVD they put out. I think it was just an eak Brilliant plain K ride. Love that thing but can't find them nowadays.

Interesting story about my 16" Recording Custom Tom and I have no way of knowing if it's true. The guy I bought it from lived in Richmond, VA. When we were talking he brought up that he was from Charlottesville and knew Carter really well from his days at Miller's. The 16" Tom I bought was made in 83 or 84. He said it was part of a set of rc that Carter used for a gig that sold him on recording customs. So apparently I have a tom Carter actually used. Whether that's true or not, I have no idea.

For pedals, Henry told me at Arkansas that Carter hated the direct drive so they moved back to the 9ks. He hadn't had time to try the chain models yet, but said he'd look into them after I raved about them so much.

I love this kind of discussion!

I'm pretty sure he regularly played a 20in K custom dark ride prior to the A custom projection ride.

Yes, it was a 20in K custom dark with a brilliant finish. I'm not sure if they still do it but you used to be able to custom order any Zildjian cymbal in a brilliant finish. I positive of that...I ordered a K heavy ride back in 1999 in a brilliant finish from Interstate Music.

Very cool! Thanks for the info! Wish Zildjian still did this. That and stop discontinuing their best cymbals!

This is one of my favorite pics of Carter's old set. I always loved the look of the old super rack system. Had to be such a pain in the ass for Henry to set it up every night. I own one and it takes a lot of work to get it just right. I'm sure the Hex was a welcomed change.

Great photo. There's times I miss the old kit, but man Henry has such an eye for this kit and making it look amazing. The kit is truly a piece of art

Do you all like playing covers listening to the full band or just D&T? I find myself doing ones over D&T just because I feel I can be more creative and do my own thing a little bit. Here’s two I just did over the last few weeks...

I think the K Custom Ride started out as a heavy K ride with brilliant finish which turned into the K Custom line? Then they added the dark? From the linked picture you can even see his floor tom legs are all the way extended.

Maybe we should try and go year by year to start out. What crashes did he use in 2002?
