Re: Damien Rice Appreciation

10 Days to Barcelona

On June 1st 2008, myself and my friends Ryan (images) & Mia (navigation) set off on a last-minute road trip from Dublin to Barcelona, squished into my little ol' mini with a portable recording studio. The idea is to stop off along the way in random places where I have to write and record a new song every day, either in the mini or outdoors on a rock or something. 10 days = 10 songs = album Nuevo. We'll update as we go... if we're anywhere near an internet connection that is. We hope to arrive in Barcelona on June 10th, or at least in time to go see Radiohead play on June 12th and then fly home for the Leonard Cohen dates. Yay!

Day 1
June 1st, 08
Rocky Valley Drive, Co. Wicklow, Ireland
Song 1 written... A song about sugar and shoulders

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=73ZBgKghPHU

Day 2
June 2nd, 2008
In Colwyn Bay, Wales, en route to destination...
The mini is perhaps a bit over loaded.. We may need to throw stuff overboard... No song yet

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Hybn_b_Lz4

Day 3
June 3rd, 2008
(Oxford, England to Montreuil sur mer, France)
A long slow drive Song 2 and 3 written

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UsLNp_aNGc

Day 4
June 4th, 2008
France.. Montreuil to Creancey
When pottering along in the mini at 45-50 miles an hour we tend to arrive at our destinations when it's time to go to bed... so andy has joined our road trip in a hybrid car from paris to zip ahead and have the recording gear set up and his musical ears ready for the night... songs 1 to 4 written and bits of recording done so far...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KX_npknd4ao

Day 5
June 6th, 2008
(France..Creancey to Les Baux en Provence)
We found a leak and a piano, song 5 written.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFa2TEClhys

Day 6
June 7th, 2008
(France, Les Baux en Provence)
The mini's gone to hospital....we're staying put for now

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21Ytu-abwF8

Day 7
June 10th, 2008
France, Les Baux en Provence
juggling with fire in the medieval town...song 7 half written

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYDQJu2ONhk

Day 8
June 11th, 2008
France, Les Baux
The mini needs a new water pump.
We won't know if it can be repaired until monday or tuesday, so unfortunately we have to move on because we've been delayed 2 days
Song 8 & 9 written

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNPizNpj8sA

Day 9
June 12th, 2008
France Les Baux - Spain Cadaques
Andy flew back home this morning
The rest of us made it past the blockade on the french/spanish border and lost ourselves in beautiful cadaque

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6Pkqb4w7WA

Day 10
June 13th, 2008
Spain, Cadaques
Still lost in Cadaques...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=146_FO7dqe8

Barcelona
June 13th, 2008
Spain, Barcelona
The road trip is over
10 songs were written
A bunch of recording is done

[video removed by user] - sorry this one got taken down

I have presents coming for people in this thread. Some of you will probably have it, but I know some won't. So come back in 30 min or so. I'm not 100% sure on Rice's policies because I can't find anything. So lets just keep it on the DL until we hear different.

O is better, but I love both albums a lot. I wish Lisa would come back; she was amazing with his stuff. I'd still love to see him live one day. There really is so much emotion in everything he sings. That note he hits on Elephant is just...WOW!

Agreed. O is the better overall album, IMO, but 9 might have some better individual songs...maybe, I'll have to give them both a listen again, it's been a while. Live at Union Chapel tunes keep popping up when I shuffle my ipod.

Childish is my favorite song from Union Chapel, but the whole thing is great. I wish I had more then 10 songs from it.

Live at Union Chapel (The Sunday Telegraph Promo)
This was a free promo, and very rare. It only had 5 tracks, and 3 are on the actual Union Chapel release. Two that were on here, but not on the release are actually great performances.

    Cannon Ball - http://www.sendspace.com/file/4ljo55
    Childish - http://www.sendspace.com/file/x8sf09

    Goldfish Memorys Soundtrack
If the movie title doesn't sound familiar to you, it's because to my knowledge it was only released across the pond. It featured 4 cover songs originally by Tom Jobim. Three of the four were by Damien, Lisa, and Vyvienne. The other by some guy named Richie Burkley.

    Once I Loved - http://www.sendspace.com/file/wcosl6
    Desafinado - http://www.sendspace.com/file/f1leda
    Waters of March - http://www.sendspace.com/file/q2xp80

    9 Crimes (Demo)
This demo is actually found on the 9 CD, but it's a hidden track. It was a zero track, that basically you had to start the 1st track and rewind to it. Not all CD players are capable of skipping forward/backward and accessing this demo. I created a thread on Ants a long time ago and many people were unaware of it. This is the guitar version of the song.

    9 Crimes (Demo) - http://www.sendspace.com/file/n251xf

    Rat Within the Grain
This is a b-side to the 9 album, and truth be told I really like it. I wish it had made the album. It's not very long, but it's always good to have more Damien.

Rat Within the Grain - http://www.sendspace.com/file/p1g8px

    Lonely Soilder
This was done with Christy Moore. This isn't rare, but it's not easy to get ahold of either. I used to have an acoustic version, that was just Damien. The guest singer has a weird voice, but after I got used to it I like him as well.

    Lonely Soilder - http://www.sendspace.com/file/4egkgn

    Cross-Eyed Bear
I really don't know much about this song. It's nice though.

    Cross Eyed Bear - http://www.sendspace.com/file/ksh8jg

    Que Sera Sera
This was done with David Gray at the Live Earth show. I loved it, and believe this is ripped from the webcast. Not sure, but it's good quality. I'm sure everyone knows this song.

    Que Sera Sera - http://www.sendspace.com/file/wdxa3p

    Dogs (1, 2, and 3)
There were three different versions of Dogs released for the single. Obviously Dogs was always track #1, but the rest were various radio Performances. In case you haven't heard it, Rootless Tree from the 3FM is absolutely AMAZING. Way better then the version on 9.

Dogs 1 (Live at Radio 3 FM)
    9 Crimes (Guitar Ver. solo) - http://www.sendspace.com/file/2dp7zc
Rootless Tree (Piano Ver. solo) - http://www.sendspace.com/file/ghqeao

Dogs 2 (Live at Wiselord Studios)
The Professor & la fille Dance - http://www.sendspace.com/file/ima69a
9 Crimes (Guitar Ver. full band) - http://www.sendspace.com/file/gclpxt
Rootless Tree (Piano Ver. full band) - http://www.sendspace.com/file/zusy3n

Dogs 3 (Live at Wiselord Studios)
    Elephant - http://www.sendspace.com/file/ovh2qh
    Accidental Babies - http://www.sendspace.com/file/ghaf6r
    Childish - http://www.sendspace.com/file/fyts08

    Unplayed Piano
This was a song they did for a charity album who's purpose is to free Aung San Suu Kyi. She's the only Nobel Peace Prize winner under house arrest.

    Unplayed Piano - http://www.sendspace.com/file/677txs

    Don't Explain
Song they did with Herbie Hancock. It's a jazz song, and for the record Lisa sounds AMAZING on it in my opinion.

    Don't Explain - http://www.sendspace.com/file/m987d5

    Pet Sounds
This was a radio show they did in June 2004. I think it's just Damien and Lisa. The quality isn't great, but it's not bad either. It's clear, but the bitrate is on the lower side. I got these over from EskimoFriends.com a long time ago. It's cool though because it's got Lisa doing lead vocals on Cannonball.

    Cannonball (Lisa ver.) - http://www.sendspace.com/file/j9ryqu
    Creep (Radiohead cover) - http://www.sendspace.com/file/ik0daz
    Older Chest - http://www.sendspace.com/file/knlfrp

Cannonball is a fantastic song. One of my favorites.

And yes, you should, give 9 a try, his other studio effort.

Fantastic post man. Thanks for all the goods! You don't mind posting some of, if not all, the highlights from the Union Chapel release? I hadn't heard of this and would like to get a taste.

You seem to be in the know about Damien: the classic I Remember video from YT (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYPCYboEpmk), is it from a live release? Is there anywhere we can see more video from that show, or get official audio recordings from that show? I'd love to have an audio rip of that I Remember.

Live at Fingerprints: Warts and All
Ok this is something I'm willing to bet none of you have. Took me a long time to track down a copy. Not sure why I didn't upload this with all the other songs. There's a place called Fingerprints Record store in Long Beach, CA. This was recorded in-store sometime in November 2006 during the 9 tour. Yes Lisa is still with him. This got released in 2007, but to my knowledge is an in store exclusive. It's more then likely out of print now. I finally found a torrent for it a while ago, and I think you'll enjoy this.

This isn't as rare as it used to be, but since it was requested I'm upping it. Make sure you grab the two songs from the earlier post from the free promo CD for this show (in my earlier post). Gives you a little more complete experiance that way. I'd highly recommend Volcano from this. Then Go, Be My Husband, and Silent Night all feature Lisa on lead vocals. All in all this is just a fantastic release.

I actually already had Fingerprints and Union Chapel.

I think they are the only two that I have like that though. Weird those are the two shows you uploaded.

Well there's not much more like that. I'm gonna look through the depths of my computer later to see if I have anything else. At one point I had this weird radio show from like France or something. I remember it having an issue like clicking, but it had Accidental Babies done on guitar. So I'd upload that if anything.

Hopefully someone else on the boards is a rice fan, and has all the b-sides/shows I haven't already uploaded. That's just crazy you had Fingerprints and not the more common b-sides I posted towards the top of the page.
