Re: Will DMB get the Rolling Stone cover for the album?
I've read through a lot of this thread and I think it's very likely that they'll get the cover...to think otherwise defies logic. It's their first major album in years, the one first since Roi passed, and they always get the cover when they release an album.
The "biggest band in America" debate is an interesting one. I think it's probably a bit of a stretch to call them THE biggest band in America, they are definitely near the top.
When you say "Dave Matthews Band," almost everyone knows what who you're talking about. They can probably name a song or two, or will at least recognize some of them.
Someone mentioned the Jonas Brothers as being more "significant." Seriously? Go around to strangers and ask them about the Jonas Brothers and the Dave Matthews Band. I guarantee you that DMB and their music will get better recognition across the board. Unless you're asking people at a Jonas Brothers concert.
Aside from maybe U2, DMB is the best touring band in the country. Simply put, they sell more tickets than anyone. They may play more shows, but the numbers wouldn't be so big if they didn't pack 'em in every night. Let's match DMB and Springsteen and their respective recent ances in Charlottesville at the John Paul Jones Arena. I know it isn't completely fair because it's DMB's homtown, but it still makes my point. DMB filled the place two nights in a row and the price of Springsteen tickets were dropped to $20 because they couldn't fill the place for one night. Moreover, DMB always sells a lot of cds. Name recognition alone, not to mention immesne fan loyalty, contributes to this in a big way. "Hey, man, did you pick up the new Dave Matthews cd today?"
Overall, I think it's fair to say that DMB is less significant now than they were 10 years ago, simply because UTTAD and BTCS > Everyday and Stand Up. To say that they are not significant, however, is just off base.
