Re: Will DMB get the Rolling Stone cover for the album?

I think they are still very much on the radar. This is proven by their concert sales. All of their big singles still get very decent radio play. And how can you say they are not radio friendly? The stuff from SU and E are some of their biggest singles success they have ever had on a chart.

Re: Will DMB get the Rolling Stone cover for the album?

i could be wrong but the fact that more people buy tickets to see dmb play than 99% of other bands/musical acts makes them ONE of America's biggest bands (depending on how you look at it curves your opinion, biggest band based on radio, touring, cd's sold)... maybe it's because they play more shows than most bands, but there is still that demand for them to play. I agree with bianca that they are not radio dominant at all and once they are done touring, only the hardcore fans care about what is going on with them.

I'll be honest, I probably would have thought dmb fell off the face of the earth or broke up without hearing from them since 2005 if i wasn't such a big fan or been to their concerts... Just my opinion

ohhh and I hope that they get the cover, they deserve it

Rollingstone magazine sucks. Has for years now. DMB will get the cover and their customary 3 out of 5 star review.

idk, i see rolling stone kissing their ass. they have been doing that lately with some older bands. (acdc, u2, springsteen, dylan, guns n roses, etc.)

Yeah dmb is non of those though. I'd say the standard 3/5 stars is comming, maybe 4 if they're lucky. Just my two.

they are america's biggest band. in their last cover story RS called dave the "biggest rockstar in america." funny how they never give 'em good reviews though.
they'll be on there i bet.
If by biggest, you mean most popular...the fucking Jonas Brothers are bigger than DMB right now. Hate to say it, but America seems to have terrible taste in music and almost all aspects of pop culture.

I agree with you. I haven't listened to the radio in years because I just never like anything on it. I just find good music by word of mouth. That's how I discovered DMB in '94 and that's how I will continue to discover new music.

i agree to that too. america has dumbed down in terms of music. i cant stand it. no body but dmb coldplay, a handful of others, and u2 are creative (well u2 is starting to go through another zooropa phase and bono needs to stop saving the world and focus on the music) but still

I don't know if this has been mentioned, but maybe the lab coats were for a photo shoot. That could just be wishful thinking on my part, though. I bet they'll be on the cover.

U2, Chili Peppers, Radiohead, hell, even country bands like Rascal Flatts are more popular (however you want to define popular). Besides, bands is a limiting term. If you want to say biggest musical acts, which is a more accurate metric, then they're not even in the top 20 anymore. Maybe to you and me, but after the summer is done and the concerts are over, who besides the hardcore fans that have been around for more than decade pay attention to DMB?

So yeah, I think they'll get a RS cover because its their first new album in four years, one that has an interesting backstory and was completed after a member passed away. Its a good story and it should be a cover, but it's the "Americas biggest band" thing I took issue with.
actually.....around where i live, more and more younger people are starting to listen to dmb. over the past several years ive been seeing t shirts and window stickers more often on a much younger crowd. which is definitely a good thing in my opinion.

DMB always has strong album sales. When you combine that with their history of RS covers, I think they are lock for the cover.

Better than 50/50 they make the cover. I'm not a big fan of the new mag style.

Slightly OT, does anyone have hi res scans of the four (five?) covers?

AB was for sure and TSB and Everyday were played a lot on the radio. Interestingly, I honestly think the stuff on Stand Up is their most un-catchy music ever written. The hooks are just bad, and the songs are hollow. It is what sucks, because their great radio singles happened when they didn't follow formulas. Oh and on a completely related note, Crush's chorus is the tits.

Whoever is trying to downplay their popularity is pretty stupid. Are they as huge now as they were in say 2000...no, but they were on top of the U.S. then. Point being with this albums likely #1 debut on the billboard charts means they join the likes of metallica and U2 as bands that have had 4 or 5 (can't remember which) albums debut number 1 in a row. That's pretty mainstream popularity folks.

Unfortunately, I think Leroi's passing makes a cover/feature more likely. From RS's point of view, a band rebounding from the death of a founding member is more interesting that a band releasing just another album.

Firstly, half the bands you listed aren't American. Secondly, DMB is consitently in the top 5 or so for ticket sales year in and year out. They are definitely not the biggest, but you are downplaying how big they actually are.

I think DMB has a good chance of making the cover. I think this trend happens with all bands. If you don't release something new constantly to America, you'll be forgotten about. Look at U2, nobody really paid much attention to them until they released their new album and now they're all over (including the cover of RS). Rolling Stone has always been fans of DMB anyways. Maybe not the music reviewer but, you know.

Re: Will DMB get the Rolling Stone cover for the album?

"mainstream" popularity is a relative term in todays music market. Album sales are so abysmal that it isn't hard for a band with DMB's fanbase to get a number #1 album. So I'm not sure that argument is really relevant in terms of RS.

If you subscribe to RS (like I do) then might have realized that RS has bands that they push as "good bands." All of this is backed up on their little lists they make, covers, stories, reviews, and whatever else. And I've noticed that DMB, and especially Dave himself, are on the list of "good bands." Even someone who posts here regularly should realize that RS runs an article concerning Dave or DMB almost every issue, and that is not an exaggeration.

My point being, there is no doubt in my mind they will get the cover...unless the album is absolute shit, they will most certainly be on the cover.
