So, Matt Mondanile will not be on the next album. He's focusing on Ducktails.
I think it's equivalent to Vampire Weekend losing Rostam.

Yeah that probably is about the same.

I mean, I like ducktails, but it really just screams "side project". Not sure why you'd devote more time to it.

I agree, it definitely screams "side project". I like Ducktails alot but I wouldn't exactly be super excited for a new Ducktails album like I would be about a new Real Estate album.

On an unrelated note. Kind of hoping for some better debut albums to come out this year. I haven't listened to any that have made a lasting impression. Only one that comes to mind is Pinegrove.

I was going to say Julien Baker, but looked it up and realized that was October 2015

"Tinker Tailor" totally flew under my radar on my first 6-8 listens and then it really clicked with me.

It has this Amnesiac vibe to me and just feels like one of the most "Radiohead" songs on the record. Absolutely love it now.

Big fan of their first two records, Atlas was too polished with lyrics too blunt and cheesy for my personal tastes.

First thing that comes to mind is that Person Pitch is definitely, definitely, not agreeing with this. This year, it's Sleep Cycle.

Scenario: Band member tries to add something new and it gets shut down by other members -or- Band member tries to add something new and it just doesn't sound right within the context of the band.

So, the band member is an artist who needs to creatively express these ideas that don't work within the context of their band, so he/she does a side project to release it. This can of course be a great thing as that member feels free and un-suppressed creatively, they can discover new things within that process that might actually work when brought back to the band, they feel a new sense of confidence and personal satisfaction and growth as a human being, they don't get burnt out in their band relationship, etc.

yeah that's a good point. maybe I could clarify that solo stuff is sort of a different animal, but then again with that in mind if you're going solo and adding a few musicians to flesh out your ideas, that's a side project

justin vernon is who I always hark back to. I know he's said before that he doesn't mind people thinking of repave as almost the third bon iver album, but to me, it works so well musically as the natural progression after s/t that, with no offense to the other non-vernon members of volcano choir, it pretty much is

I get it if you want a certain group/artist defined by a particular sound and you want to use a solo/side project to step outside of that. Like Maynard with APC as opposed to Tool.

But, like, Josh Homme? The dude has, like, eight side projects and they all sound like Queens of the Stone Age. What's the point of that?

I've really loved the last two albums put out by Real Estate. They've become a staple band in my commute to work and losing Matt could radically change the sound of the band. I'm interested to hear how both parties proceed...

    this is my point

father john misty and noah did solo efforts and had relatively distinct sounds. vernon out here doing shouting matches and volcano choir that sound like cool twists on bon iver
