Re: Poll: Best MLB Starting Pitcher (All Time)

If you want to look at half seasons (I know it's arbitrary) then Orel Hershisers second half and postseason of 1988 could be the best ever.

I call that a couple of good years (also that Angels team to come in first, still was not a great team) sprinkled over a 25 year career.

Also, one of those Astros teams to finished first did so in the fucked up 1981 season that was broken in half by a strike and nothing that year made sense.

Actually, I didn't count 1981 at all. They finished 3rd that year anyways.

Sorry, I was wrong that, I was looking at the 82 record but looking at the 81 line.

Still 100% stand by that he was on a couple of good/decent teams but mostly turds to mediocre ones.

    9 straight gold gloves

the mvp thing must be NL only, right? because I can think of 5 who won mvp in the AL alone in the last 40 years.

he's been talked about a lot in the thread. I would have no problem him being on the list but have no problem with him not on it. He's in the next group, no doubt.

correct - there have been 8 AL MVPS that were pitchers since 1950.

Comparing a few *select* stats between Gibson and Maddux

Complete Games - 109 Maddux vs 255 Gibson (gibson only played 17 years vs Maddux 23 years)
    Shutouts - 35 Maddux vs 56 Gibson
    ERA - 3.16 Maddux vs 2.91 Gibson

    Postseason - 11-14, 3.27ERA Maddux vs 7-2, 1.89ERA Gibson

I'd say he definitely belongs on top 10 list of all time pitchers.

Different eras, though. Gibson pitched in pitcher's era while Maddux was in a hitter's era. Several guys compare stats wise close to Gibson or better like Koufax, while very few did what Maddux did. Maybe Pedro, Randy or a ped clemens. CG are hard to measure due to the advent of closers and specialty guys. When you add in postseason, they are not close. That's where my biggest issue with Maddux was.

Believe me, I am not knocking Gibson. His 1968 season was an all time season. It's a crime he lost 9 games that year.

I think when looking at starting pitchers, there are three things you can look to compare:

How a pitcher did at his 5 year peak (5 best consecutive seasons): Best pitchers, at least post 1960 at this are: Pedro, Maddux, Koufax, Randy Johnson
How a pitcher did in his 10 best overall seasons (any 10 seasons): Best pitchers, same time period, are Maddux, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens
Entire career of a pitcher: This is the only list Ryan would appear, but you still got Maddux, Randy Johnson, Roger Clemens on this list

Gibson played in the playoffs 3 times.

Maddux was in the playoffs 13 different times.

Not really fair to compare those two records with each other.

The point of my post was not that Gibson is better than Maddux, but that given those comparisons, Gibson at a minimum belongs in the discussion with top 10 pitchers.

Also, Gibson was at his PEAK during 6 of those 9 playoff games so yes, it may be a slightly unfair comparison to Maddux 13 playoff appearances.

If I was picking 1 pitcher (from modern era) at the peak of their career to pitch for me for 1 year, it would without a doubt be Gibson. No one else has been more dominant than he was '67-'68.

How is Maddux underrated? He's consistently talked about as one of the greatest starters (and not just righties) of all time.

more rounds of playoffs and wild cards for Maddux. Gibson only pitched in the WS since that is all there was.
