U2 Discussion

I saw them in 2011 summer, had the worst seats possible in a football stadium but it felt like I was front row. Sound was so good, they sounded so good, just an epic event. Was a show more than a concert with everything that was going on like balloons, fireworks, a huge ass stage with Bono running around. One of the best shows I've been to ever

It kind of amazes me that people still actually get paid to write blog posts shitting on bands, especially ones that it's so fucking cliche to shit on it's not remotely clever or funny anymore.

To be completely fair, the best point that article makes is about another band:

"Repetitiveness generally isn’t all that grave a crime in pop music. For example, literally every song the Red Hot Chili Peppers have ever recorded is just Anthony Kiedis saying “Llama gamma busy hella fizzy California” over the opening credits music from The Cosby Show, and they’ve been doing it for over 30 years and nobody cares. This is because the Red Hot Chili Peppers are just some goofballs turning the crank and hoping it’ll spit out another “Under the Bridge,” and they know it as well as we do, and hey, the world is full of people turning cranks. Much of life is crank-turning. Nobody can get mad at the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It would be like getting mad at a fry cook because his quarter-pounders always taste the same."

So glad to see a U2 thread exists and its not to shit on them.

Saw them opening night of MSG for my first ever U2 show and was blown away. Picked up a ticket to the show on 7/23 and was absolutely amazed at how great the show was, even though it was very similar. Went last night too and am going tonight.

Hoping for my first Bad, Gloria, 40...... A Sort of Homecoming (which won't happen, but hey you never know)

Here is a question for the fans here and that I was discussing with someone.

Could U2 go on with out Edge? For whatever reason he can't go on, could they find someone else and make it work enough to keep touring, etc?

    Eh....musically? Yes, 100%.

Would people accept U2 without him? I dunno, he's part of the whole U2 image, so he may be irreplaceable by fans. Diehards, for sure. Others may not care.

You can't replace any member. They all need each other to exist. Greatest bond in music history. Closer than brothers.

Beatles closest bond? There's an entire album of largely individually recorded songs because they hated being in the studio with each other so much. And they broke up after 10 years...

U2 all live near each other, vacation together, etc. they're always there. There was the opportunity for Edge and Bono to drop Adam and Larry for better musicians, and they flatly refused.

I'm pretty sure this was it unless they add another leg.

Just read atu2.com's writeup of part of the town hall. Seems like the new album (Songs of Experience) is coming along. The way Bono spoke of it, it seems like it is still going to bounce off of Songs of Innocence, thematically.

Hopefully it comes out sooner than later, but I'm not holding my breath. They like to take elongated gaps between their albums -- which is a nice way of saying Bono is very indecisive.

Also, nice to see Two Hearts Beat as One get played again. Love that song.

I think people are mislead with how close the bond between The Beatles was. Or at least how long it lasted. It was certainly very close for the first half of their career, but it went down hill in the late sixties. I'm a huge Beatles fan and have "studied" their history quite a bit for 20 years. Some may be surprised to hear that there was very little collaboration on albums like the White Album. They basically all wrote their own tunes and threw them on an album. Most of the members of the band can't even remember who is playing what on what song. They couldn't stand each other during the Let It Be sessions. They came back together for the recording of Abbey Road and had a pretty positive experience, but after that they pretty much went their separate ways. Paul was really the only reason they stayed together as long as they did. He tried to force something that just wasn't really there anymore and it caused a lot of friction within the band. They may have been better to separate around 67/68, let everyione do their thing for awhile, and maybe eventually come back together, but Paul just didn't want to let it all go.

Once the band went separate ways John pretty much went into seclusion and focused on his family. Paul and George did their own thing musically and Ringo bounced around here and there. I think Ringo was really just in the middle of a lot of stuff and went with the flow, but John and George became closer and even recorded a song that was pretty much a middle finger to Paul. There were even law suits that took place between them post Beatles.

U2 has had a much longer career than The Beatles, so just the length of time together without any split ups would debunk the claim that The Beatles had a closer bond. U2 came together as teenagers (not much later in their lives than when John, Paul and George came together) and are still great friends and bandmates in their mid 50s. The Beatles toured and had been playing together prior to their hitting it big, but they really weren't together that long as a relevant act. Please Please Me came out in 1963 and their last album was released in 1970, and that was released after the band split. That would be the equivalent of U2 splitting up between Rattle and Hum and Achtung Baby.

I love The Beatles, and there's no denying their importance to music and pop culture, but I think things tend to get blown out of proportion when it comes to them because they're THE BEATLES.

The Beatles were one of the great starter bands for me. While I still love a lot of what they did, there's no one album I enjoy listening through completely anymore. They're a band firmly attached to my formative years of fandom. U2 is very different. Their music hits me on a deeper emotional level, one that shifts and evolves as I get older. It's simply more meaningful music to my ears and spirit.

I assume they will, yes. HBO usually puts everything out on Blu-Ray/DVD. I hope U2 release a live album as well.

With the terrorist attacks, this could be a very special show captured on blu-ray. Could be huge.
