So, is it weird that thousands of people cried during 9/11? I mean, they likely didn't know any of the people in the towers. Bunch of weirdos.

He was at a fundraising event at UofL in 2009 where I got to meet and talk with him briefly. That was a great experience but a year earlier in 08 he was at a UofL-Georgetown game at Freedom Hall. He was sitting in our AD's box and I was about 100 feet away in the student section. At some point during actual gameplay I happened to look over at him with a clear line of sight. He was staring at me and raised his hand to his face to wave as best as he could. I waved back and got my buddies attention to make sure I wasn't going crazy. I know it's not much but it blew my f*cking mind at the time. To have one of the greatest athletes of all time acknowledge you in a room of 22k people was surreal.

if you've got 8 minutes to burn, watch Ali take on Cleveland Williams - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJUzl0aFHZw

I think that's Ali's greatest performance in the ring, ever.

and that guy, to the casual viewer, might just be a stiff that Ali fought, but Cleveland Williams is regarded as the greatest fighter to never hold a title and had a devastating hook. Sonny Liston said he was the hardest puncher he ever faced.

Ali fought like a middleweight with his speed, but his power was so understated.

I'd never heard of Cleveland Williams before, but again I'm not a boxing guy

yeah Ali's speed/movement are really a treat to watch, even to a casual viewer like me

Re: Muhammad Ali won't be down to fight another round

In 1963, Cassius Clay went to England to fight Henry Cooper. Clay wore a crown into the ring & mocked the UK boxer for months leading up to the fight, calling him a bum.

Late in the 4th, with under 10 seconds left, Cooper landed a devastating left jab that sent Clay into the ropes. Only his armpit saved Clay from bouncing his head off the hard ring.

In those days, a boxer could be saved by the bell; and Clay staggered to his corner. Angelo Dundee waved him over, sat him down, gave him smelling salts, and tore at his glove; and then complained to the ref that Clay needed to change his gloves.

The delay either bought Clay a few seconds or a full minute; the actual record is unclear. After the 5th round restarted Clay fought Cooper above the eye opening a bloody gash. Seconds later the ref stopped the fight. Clay survived & in his very next bout defeated Sonny Liston in an enormous upset that truly made Mohammed Ali into the character he was.

Dundee calling Clay over was a rules violation
Dundee using smelling salts was a UK rules violation that should have led to a DQ
Dundee ripping the glove was a violation

40 years after the fight Ali called up Cooper to discuss the fight & talk about the punch in the 4th. Because even he knew that without a bit of luck & some shady corner work Clay never fights Sonny Liston & Mohammed Ali never exists.

Why didn't Ali allow his brain to be researched for science? Hasn't he been pretty much the ambassador for Parkinsons?

My favorite Ali fight to watch is against Patterson. Basically tortured him for 12 rounds because he wouldn't call him Ali.

Patterson is probably my favorite Ali performance as well....Not counting the 3rd Frazier fight which is one of my 5 favorite fights of all time.

Amazing to think about him walking away for 3 years. Pride & Principles > Money & Fame. I respect the hell out of that.

Even though I don't believe he's the All Time Greatest Boxer, or even in the top 3 there is no doubt that he is the most influential boxer and maybe even athlete of all time

I guess in hindsight it's a good look because of how awful the war was, but would he be looked at as courageous if he refused to go to WW2 or any other war that was justified?

honestly, he probably would've had it easy in the army. probably doing USO exhibitions and staying behind the scenes. When I think of courageous, I think more of guys like ted Williams who fought for his country in the prime of his career. twice
