Re: Muhammad Ali won't be down to fight another round
In 1963, Cassius Clay went to England to fight Henry Cooper. Clay wore a crown into the ring & mocked the UK boxer for months leading up to the fight, calling him a bum.
Late in the 4th, with under 10 seconds left, Cooper landed a devastating left jab that sent Clay into the ropes. Only his armpit saved Clay from bouncing his head off the hard ring.
In those days, a boxer could be saved by the bell; and Clay staggered to his corner. Angelo Dundee waved him over, sat him down, gave him smelling salts, and tore at his glove; and then complained to the ref that Clay needed to change his gloves.
The delay either bought Clay a few seconds or a full minute; the actual record is unclear. After the 5th round restarted Clay fought Cooper above the eye opening a bloody gash. Seconds later the ref stopped the fight. Clay survived & in his very next bout defeated Sonny Liston in an enormous upset that truly made Mohammed Ali into the character he was.
Dundee calling Clay over was a rules violation
Dundee using smelling salts was a UK rules violation that should have led to a DQ
Dundee ripping the glove was a violation
40 years after the fight Ali called up Cooper to discuss the fight & talk about the punch in the 4th. Because even he knew that without a bit of luck & some shady corner work Clay never fights Sonny Liston & Mohammed Ali never exists.
