NCAA shouldn't have been able to sanction PSU at all actually. PSU agreed to the sanctions because they knew it would be bad pub if they fought them. Once someone (I think it was the Paterno estate) decided to fight them it was pretty clear the NCAA had no right to sanction them. Even emails between Emmert and other higher ups at the NCAA suggest they were aware of this, which is why they were lifted without much push back.

we can debate that and have different views, that's ok. I think everyone getting fired/arrested, the unprecedented fine, and the punishments to the football program itself were a bit more than " a slap on the wrist"

I get that for some people, anything short of the death penalty was going to be too soft

all that said, maybe I was wrong the whole time. With Jay Paterno getting elected to the Board, PSU again comes off as, at best, completely tone deaf. At worst, they come across as wanting to move backwards to reinstate Joe Paterno's legacy.

I still don't really think the death penalty would change recent events though
