Re: Ants Photography Thread

Anyone here shoot film or is everyone digital? I recently purchased a Nikon N80 w/grip, a 24-85mm nikkor, and a brick of slide film. I just love shooting film but it get's pricey. $5 per roll plus another $10 for development, it adds up quick.

for sure...there is really no need to shoot film anymore. With digital you can take 100 shots just to experiment and get it right. If I shot film I'd be broke. I use the Nikon D100, and love it.

Yeah, I have the D50 as well which I just love but film makes me really be careful with a shot. It makes think a bit more. I've noticed I can sometimes get lazy with digital since it's so easy to shoot and delete. I'm on auto pilot sometimes when I shoot. With film, I'm forced to really think about what I'm doing and why. I'm must more contious about my actions when I shoot slides.

I've calculated it'll cost me $.36 per shot with that brick I just purchased. ($180 for development and shipping and $80 to have them put on CD.) I realize 95% of those 720 shots will be essentially worthless but if I can get 36 (or more) excellent to WOW shots then to me it's worth it. Since I typically like to shoot landscapes, film will reign supreme with me. If I'm out on the town or experimenting, digital is the way to go.

I generally carry both if I'm out seriously shooting. I'll use the D50 to find a shot, get a meter reading, take a few expiremental shots and get the "right" exposure. Once I have one I like on digital, I'll whip out the N80 and capture it on slide. A large print from a cleanly shot slide makes a world of difference when compared to digital, espcially landscape.

Went out shooting this morning in what was dreary, cold, and foggy weather. I came away with one image I really liked. Since the color was very bland, I converted it to B&W which, to me, really reflected the mood this morning.

We had some more really havy, thick fog yesterday morning. Here are a few of the better images taken.

Landscape and nature photography is not my taste, but I really enjoy you're work. My gf is crazy about trees and she loves your shots.

Is anyone out there shooting with a Nikon D200? I have a D100 and I want to upgrade. The D300 is out of my price range but I can get a used D200 for about a grand on eBay. Any thoughts?

I use the D100 too. My brother and I wanted to upgrade to the D300 but we opted for a 51" plasma for the condo instead.

I haven't shot a D200 but check out www.nikonians.org and go to their forum. They have a "For Sale" section and you can get great deals from other Nikon enthusiats selling their gear due to upgrades. D200's generally sell for $800-900. I've purchased an 18-200mm VR and a 24-85mm from members there and they were in tip top shape - and for far less than eBay.
