Rosenthal mentions the history in his article:

Quote:
Players are swayed by the allure of helping the Cubs win their first World Series since 1908 -- Heyward, like Zobrist, had better financial offers from other clubs. The Nationals offered Heyward $200 million and the Cardinals also were believed to be at that number, according to major-league sources.

Epstein and Hoyer have something to sell -- history, Wrigley, Chicago -- and they sell it well.
It just depends on the player. History might be important to some guys and not to others. Price said for years that Chicago would be the coolest place to win it all, but he went to the highest bidder (as he should have).

Being on a team like the 04 Red Sox or a Cubs winner is a bigger deal than the 15 Royals.

Remember when there were posters in this thread that thought that all money was equal, and they were yammering about how any team is the same...all that matters is money, not location or happiness with surroundings or getting to play with the best manager in baseball or chances of winning or prestige or anything?

Remember how they perpetuated this myth that continues to this day that players only care about the max dollar....and general happiness like playing for a good manager and a team with a good chance at a winning future needs to be completely discounted...that any fan that notices the trend should be ridiculed? After all, smart baseball people know that contracts can be explained away with opt-outs. Amirite?

Must suck knowing Cubs are coming in hot.

For some reason I am still pretty hesitant to trade Soler. Would trade Baez before Soler. Much higher on Soler's offense

    Biggest move of the off-season.

Reports out of Japan say legend Matt Murton has returned to the Cubs on a minor league deal: http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20...000001-dal-spo

    @ckamka: .294/.362/.448 That's Matt Murton in his 308 games with #Cubs (2005-08).

Last time Matt Murton hit a Major League home run, it was off Randy Johnson. 5/6/2009.

Cubs definitely have history on their side, albeit the "Lovable Losers," the ballpark is probably the best part about the franchise and playing there would be pretty sweet.

04 Red Sex breaking the curse was a big deal and all but I think the whole mystique around that team was in the way they won the ALCS. Had they won in 5-6 games against a team other than the Yankees it would probably be a little more similar to the 2005 White Sox breaking their long WS streak.

Ending streaks are special but it's who you beat what really magnifies it and makes the media obsess over you. Cubs beating the Cardinals is another example of that. The momentum was even more powerful going into the NLCS because they had just beaten their bitter rival.

Meant to add this to my previous post, but 15 Royals winning it all would be a bigger deal than the 16 Cubs winning it all imo. Royals are a small market team and what they've done has been nothing short of miraculous. Best team in the MLB since 2014 no question seeing that the Giants didn't mean the playoffs last year.

The Cubs are absolutely stacked and have money falling out of their pockets it seems like and they're penciled in to win the WS this year. If they actually win it all, would we really be that surprised?

Don't get me wrong, Cubs winning would be huge but an underdog, rag tag Cubs team winning it all would be the bigger deal than this team.

I don't understand this post at all. 15 Royals winning would be a bigger deal than the 16 cubs to who?

And yes, even though they are considered strong contenders this year they still have to get past the fact that they are the lovable losers. People will count them out because of their history no matter how good they are on paper.

And yes, even though they are considered strong contenders this year they still have to get past the fact that they are the lovable losers. People will count them out because of their history no matter how good they are on paper.
Anyone who can look at a roster

Sure, people will count them out because they're the Cubs but Vegas has them at a 4-1 favorite to win the World Series. At first everyone would be like, "Wow the Cubs finally won!" but when then hangover is over you look back and say, "no shit they won, they were stacked."

Royals did it with a smaller payroll and a different approach to the game. That's why based on the actual game of baseball it's a bigger deal. In the media and America sports culture in general, sure the Cubs winning is a bigger deal but that's not the real story most of the time.

I'm still confused. Anyone who can look at a roster? You know that KC was in the world series the year before, right?

I guess KC would be the more unlikely of the two to win the WS, but not sure how it would be considered a "bigger deal". I'm sure the cubs would get much more press, better ratings, etc. etc.

Are you saying that its a bigger deal when small market teams win vs. big market teams?

Wasn't KC's payroll like $5 mm less than ours last year?

The season hasn't even started and people are already trying to rain on the parade. That hasn't been scheduled. Because they haven't won shit in 108 years.

But they have a competitive team this year, so, it won't be special? Or at least as special as that "miraculous" 2015 KC season?

    Give me a break.
