I'm always trying to capture RR differently too. Already looking forward to next season and getting up there with a nice tripod and a fisheye.

Thanks guys! Yeah tons of kids at festivals all the time. It is very strange to me... I would never ever want to bring my (future) kids anywhere near these crowds.

Finally got my pics up from Phases of the Moon fest. My first major festival, was a ton of work but a lot of fun. Also lots of kids and a giant freaking bubble rope.

Some good Tedeschi Trucks, Robert Randolph, and String Cheese Shots down at the bottom of the page.

Finally got a prime lens for my Nikon D3100. Got a Visa giftcard for basically just leasing my Escape so used it towards a 35mm. Can't wait to try it out when I get home. Or more likely, this weekend for real but.... still.

Complete throwback here, but I just recently shot some stuff for work on a 50mm lens and I loved the way it came out (would post it but I'd rather play it safe considering it's work related). It was on a Canon 5D which I love, and that may have had something to do with it, but it renewed my interest in this specific lens for my Nikon D3000.

What's the difference between the D (this lens) and the G?

I believe the G has a motor and ap ring.

Some complained that it felt too "plasticy"...never bothered me.

I think D had an aperture ring - which i didn't think i needed either.

Tried photographing the lunar eclipse this morning. Wow, it was dark to shoot compared to shooting a normal full moon. I had to crank the ISO up, so I don't think it's going to come out all that great. I'll try to post it tonight if it turned out alright.

For the normal full moon I was using: f/11, 1/125, ISO 64
For the lunar eclipse I was using: f/4, 1/60, ISO 1600 and it still wasn't perfectly bright

So you own the G? Any examples of things you've shot with it? I've been looking hard at the D, but then realized some of the stuff I was looking at was shot with a G. It seems to me like the only difference is price, honestly.

the G has the motor - no app ring; 8 glass elements, 9 blade aperture

the D has no motor but does have an app ring; 7 glass elements, 7 blade aperture

Here's my photo of the lunar eclipse. Not as great as I was hoping, but it's a tough thing to shoot.

yeah that's tough. Still looks pretty cool.

Could you have opened up the shutter a little longer? Maybe a 1 second exposure?

I probably could have slowed it down some, but I'm not sure how much. The moon actually moves really fast. When you are looking at it close enough (like when using a long lens) and you view it through live view you can you easily see it moving across the screen. About every 30 seconds or so I had to readjust my camera position to re-center the moon and that was when I was "leading" the moon when I repositioned it in order to give me more time to shoot before it gets off center again.

I think that photo was actually shot at 1/25th of a second. I was worried going slower would just blur the details of the moon even more because of it's movement. I'm sure there probably is a rule of thumb out there for how slow of a shutter speed I could use based on the focal length of the lens being used.

    Ah yeah that makes sense.

I just know from past experience that when I try to shoot the stars, anything longer than 35-45 seconds is when you start to notice the blur.

This is at exactly 45 seconds 2 weeks ago

    https://plus.google.com/u/0/11200661...11132742758801

I assumed the moon would be much faster but yeah that sounds crazy fast!

I know it depends on the focal length. With stars I think the rule of thumb is to divide 600 by your focal length and that's the longest exposure you can use without creating star trails. I was just trying to find a similar rule for the moon and didn't really have any luck, but one site did say for a 500mm lens to assume that 0.5 to 1 second is the longest exposure before the movement becomes objectionable. I should have tried a longer exposure. Oh well.

All Nikon pro stuff. I use 4 different cameras when I shoot the games (one of them being a remote camera setup somewhere).

dude you're shots are fucking awesome.

Do you have one of those insanely huge like 500mm+ telephoto lenses?

Also... do you get to meet the cheerleaders and players and shit??? Giggity.

I would kill to shoot a sporting event...!

Here's a show I shot over the weekend..

Joe Russo's Almost Dead. One of the best Dead shows I've seen in a LONG time. Bonus free SBD mixes at the bottom of the post. !!

Yes, I have a 500mm lens. I don't get to "meet" the cheerleaders and players, but I'm right up next to them a lot. I shot a charity event they did last season and I had to ride on a small chartered plane with two of the cheerleaders to get to the event. So I guess I did meet two of them, but it's not a typical thing. Basically as photographers we're supposed to be more like flies on the wall. We're just their to document what happens, not interact with it.
