Re: Australian Tour April 07.....

In a blurb from an Australian newspaper:

http://www.news.com.au/sundaymail/st...003421,00.html

Festival fever

THIS column was the first to break the news of next month's Robbie Williams shows at Suncorp Stadium. Here are my concert forecasts for next year. Bob Dylan, riding high with his Modern Times album, will tour mid-year. Earlier, we'll feel the impact of tours by Keith Urban (May), John Mayer (April) and the Dave Matthews Band (April).

You beat me to it! I was reading the paper this morning, and it was the last thing I was expecting to come across - a nice surprise!

It also says that DMB will be headlining the Friday night of the Byron Blues and Roots Festival.

And the guy who writes the column (Ritchie Yorke) is not only a reliable source, he's also a fan I believe - if I recall correctly, he was full of praise for Dave when he won that Grammy for Gravedigger, and if I dig out my newspaper clipping from their last Aussie tour, I'm sure he said good things then too!

    But this is great news!

Another article from this morning, saying that DMB are *confirmed* for Bluesfest. No official word yet, but I have everything crossed! Link:

If you read it cloesly though it seems to just copy verbatim what the previous article said (at least about DMB and Mayer). The BB King material is the only new info... But it is looking good (although not for me, being in Canada till next year - boo).

That would be fine by me...seems ridiculous if they didn't add in the other capital cities, because my Warehouse membership was destined for such a moment as this.

    cont'd:

    Why?

    1) Gomez are on Dave's label - they'll do what he tells 'em dammit (j/k)
    2) We already know they're gonna be at the East/West fests together - why not split the bill on the "rest" of their aussie tour?
    3) Irrespective of split bill/openers, they'll likely need a larger venue than the palais (~2700 capacity). Last tour they sold out 2 nights there in record time. Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see 'em go back there but just can't see it happening. The only 3 other 'usual' venues in Melbourne that are larger are:

    a) Festival hall - capacity of ~8k i think. it is just horrible tho. if they play there I'll genuinely consider not going - which is a big call for me.
    b) Rod Laver - ~ 15,000 I think its too big for DMB. Is particularly horrible when not packed.
    c) Music Bowl - theoretical capacity of up to 30,000 - BUT only ~2000 of those are seated - the rest is lawn. More realistic capacity is 15,000 (as seen at the MPH gig recently). I think on their own they could sell ~6k + Gomez would get them at least another 3k. The venue would hedge their bets - if they do only sell 7-9k everyone on the lawn just gets a bit more space.

    *shrug* that's it. That's all I've got.

Sydney needs an amphitheatre...unless they did something to Centennial Park just like what was done when Jack Johnson played there a couple of years back, or use the Domain. Otherwise, I guess it'll probably be the Hordern Pavillion or maybe the Entertainment Centre if they were to do just the one show.

I'd put my money on Hordern for Sydney.

What about a John Mayer + DMB double bill tour in Aus? Then they could certainly sell out venues a lot bigger than they would do individually, and would raise the profile of both hugely.
