Smashing Pumpkins Appreciation

Anybody else a big smashing pumpkins fan?

I used to listen to them non-stop and recently got back into it. I know the number of people that trash them is prolly about equal to the fans...so flame away or show some love.

What are your favorite songs, albums, nostalgia....?

Personally Siamese Dream, MCIS, and Adore are three of my favorite albums of all time. Each so different yet so great.

I know it's all opinion, but I consider MCIS to be the best album of the 90's, hands down. Everything about it is amazing. The music itself, the music videos (especially 33), the album artwork, the packaging, the lyrics, the theme of each disc, the order of the songs, everything. So much more thought than just writing good music went into that album to make it perfect. In my eyes at least, it is one of the few true masterpieces of our time in every sense.

That said, my favorite Pumpkins song is and will forever by Mayonaise.

I love Siamese Dream, and Mellon Collie pretty good and doesn't get enough credit. I never thought adore was that great as a record, but the song Annie Dog is really good. I even appreciate the intentions of Machina, Machina II, and zeitgeieieieiest, but none of them are all that great.

I've never heard Gish, but I've been told it's pretty good.

Haven't been noteworthy in over 10 years, though since 1996 they have had a few good songs: Christmastime, Tarantula, Untitled, Ava Adore, Stand Inside Your Love, The End is the Beginning is the End, Daphne Descends...

Annie Dog is amazing. You should definitely listen to Gish - if for nothing else, then for Rhinocerous. Absolutely phenomenal tune.

Edit: While Adore's relevant to the discussion, Blank Page and For Martha are incredible.

Mayo is so beautiful. The solo on Soma could be the most emotional solo ive ever heard, just face melting. And Hummer is my favorite song everrr. Siamese Dream is so damn good.

I often play Soma -> Mayo -> Spaceboy when I'm in a Pumpkins mood at Open Mic. Sometimes when there aren't too many people signed up and I have a bit of extra time, I'll throw Geek USA in there too, because it sounds super cool acoustic. Awesome four song run there, not to mention it comes right after Hummer -> Rocket -> Disarm. That whole album is incredible.

    Agreed.

I also love Gish. MCIS? Meh, I can take it or leave it.

Rhinoceros is awesome, as are Crush, Snail, and Tristessa from that album too.

They have sweet b-sides too. Glynis, Pennies, Starla, Obscured, Plume...the list goes on. A lot of it is better than some album tunes.

So, Billy is now the only member left in the band? I'm sure that's how he always really wanted it though.

Yeah, pretty sure it's just him now. Jimmy never strays too far though, if the past is any indication. All of their reunion tours felt empty without D'arcy and James though. They'll never be the same. The music was the same, but the dynamic is just completely gone. That was one of my favorite things about this band. Look up "Acoustic Mayonaise" on youtube to see what I mean.

Any of the band's singles, plus Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness disc 1 to start.

No Problem! I should say though that I'm a bigger fan of the band's more laid back tunes than their heavy ones. If it's heavy you're looking for, check out Where Boys Fear To Tread, Geek USA, Silverfuck, Set The Ray To Jerry, XYU, Tales of A Scorched Earth, I Am One, Siva, Bodies, An Ode To No One, and whatever anyone else suggests. Even if that's your thing though, don't overlook the list I already posted. I, and many others, find the Pumpkins' less than "in your face heavy" work to be their best.

And while we're here, everyone who sees this thread, whether you like the Pumpkins or not, should watch the music video for Thirty Three. Simply beautiful:

And the acoustic Mayonaise video I mentioned earlier:
