Re: True Detective-New HBO Show

I don't think it's Rustin either. I think any hint that it's him, and the cops thinking it's him, is just a red herring.

Like Casey said, it's too obvious.

Really enjoyed the premiere. But all this thought about either of the detectives being the killer is too hokey and absurd IMO.

Great acting, and though some say it's slow, I like those slow-burning shows. It'll likely ratchet up though.

Slow build is pretty much always better when it comes to crime dramas, especially if it's a mystery. Then things come together much more naturally with a much greater payoff. I don't know why you'd expect to be instantly gratified in a pilot. That's network television storytelling.

I am digging this show. I am also looking forward to the new season of Hannibal on NBC. Both shows have that eerie vibe.

This show is awesome. I feel this might turn out to be one of HBO's best shows!

    "Able to sleep."

    "I don't sleep; I dream."

    :death stare:

The car scenes are priceless. Hope it's a regular thing.

I'm about to talk about what happened in the episode and my thoughts on a few things, so if you haven't watched it yet, you may want to skip this part

there seem to be a lot of hints (camera angles, minute details) that really point to Rustin (mcconaughey) being the killer:

    1. When matt and woody are driving, they cut to a billboard of a woman that was murdered and the caption says "who killed me?" and then they pan right back to Rustin.
    2. When Rustin is looking over the crime scene of the girl with the antlers, they cut to woody and an entire team of police officers heading towards Rustin....all the while Rustin seems to be almost "admiring" the work (his work?)
    3. After the press conference announcing the murder, the audio sort of carries over to the next scene and you hear "this man will be brought to Louisiana justice", and they show Rustin, and then they show the prison that they are about to visit....almost as if inferring that he'll be the one to serve the time.
    4. When they are talking to a citizen in the same town where the little girl (marie) went missing, the citizen looks strangely at Rustin, and he sort of walks behind woody and then turns sideways...almost as if the citizen recognized him, or Rustin was acting weird around him. (this is brilliant execution by the director and mcconaughey, it's so small, yet detailed, the way he moves behind woody and then turns sideways away from him)
    5. Rustin is either a really great detective, or he's the killer....he knew Dora was a prostitute, he referenced the antlers as being a "crown", and the coroner said the same thing. He corrects woody when he says "this guy seems to have made this really personal", and says that it's completely not personal at all, and that this definitely isn't his first kill.
    6. When he shows up drunk at woody's house, it's almost as like he could be depressed because the trail on him is getting really hot, and he wanted a way to take out his emotions.
    6. The final shot when the questioners want information and he says "you better start asking the right fuckin questions", and then of course how long the camera stays with Rustin

I could be completely grasping at straws here, or maybe there is some merit to what I said. In all honesty, I'd prefer if he isn't the killer.

Did anyone notice the repeated occurrence of the cross and christianity and then satanism? and even though Rustin claims to be anti-christian, he wears a cross. Just seems a little odd.

I'm really intrigued to see what sort of falling out Woody and Rustin had. Can't wait for the next episodes!

Thanks for posting that! Awesome and I definitely agree with what that writer is saying.

And yes that's correct. New story/actors each season. If this season goes how I think it can, it will be very tough to top this first season. Harrelson and mccaughoney are just that good together.

Definitely thought tonight's episode was a little slower but still very good. I always have to go back and rewatch it because I can't understand what they are saying and I pick up on a lot of stuff I missed the first time.

This show is awesome. Watched both this weekend. I'm instantly hooked and can't wait to see where they take it.

This will only be an 8 episode mini-series, correct? No season 2? Disappointing because these characters are great.

Ahh, gotcha So they are kinda taking the American Horror Story route, only using a different cast. I was wondering because I noticed that Woody and MM are executive producers of the show...wonder if they will be for Season 2 as well.

that's a good question, if season 1 is a success (and looks like it will be), i don't see why they wouldn't stay on as exec. producers...and easy buck if you ask me on top of all the artistic gratification they may get out of it

the only character i'm not too fond of so far is the police chief. maybe it's just his acting or maybe it's the character too, i'm not sure but he seems to slow down scenes when he's in them. mcconaughey & woody should never be 2nd or 3rd fiddle in a scene in this show

Still haven't watched this week. Doesn't shock me that Harrleson is seeing that broad on the side, they hinted at that pretty heavily in ep. 1.

Kind of an understatement. No reason that girl would have needed to give deposition copies to Woddy and him only. I'd imagine police don't mess with depositions anyways. That's stuff between attorneys.

it's pretty good so far. it's pretty slow, but mcconaughey and woody are great together, and it's still keeping me very intrigued to see where it's going.

i highly recommend it. the story is interesting, the characters are intriguing and the acting is suberb. it's also not much of a time committment, it's only 8 episodes per season and they will reset the cast and story for season 2 (and each season thereafter)
