U2 Discussion

There appear to be enough U2 fans about, and enough defendants of Bono in the Bono sucks thread, to justify this. I searched but U2 is too short for the search engine to handle.

Anyway, I've only really properly got into U2 in the last few months, and i can't get enough of them. They may be over earnest and proletysing at times, but there aren't many bands about who have been as consistently good with the same line up for 30 years like these guys have.

Right now i'm listening to the Hasta la Vista Baby record from the Popmart tour. It's fantastic.

So, whether you like or hate U2, discuss away.

I'd put Acthung Baby as their best. I've only recently given Pop a listen, and enjoyed it very much. It's weird that the band themselves seem unhappy with it.

They're unhappy because the mixing was rushed so they could go on tour.

The mixing was very rushed. They went back and remixed several songs for the Best of 1990-2000 CD and they turned out really good.

It was rushed, like you said, because they booked the tour BEFORE they made the album, which was not a good idea in my books. But I think the album turned out alright anyways. Pop is by far their most underrated album. I absoolutely love Gone and Last Night On Earth.

The new mix of Gone is the only Best of 1990-2000 remix I care for.

I also dig the single versions of Please (my favourite U2 song) and Last Night on Earth.

But I prefer the album version of Please to the single version.

    I finally found a U2 thread.

I was going to make one, but this will do. So, any other big time fans in the Ants world?

    My favorite U2 album
I borrowed it from the library when I first decided to give the band a listen beyond their singles. The guitar intro or whatever to Zoo Station came on and I was like wtf is this? The album pretty much wasn't what I was expecting.

I guess U2 isn't very popular on these boards. I think U2's work is decent; they're not one of my favorites but I have U218 singles and I'll pop that in every once in a while. They are overrated live from what I've been told, but they do a ton of charity work which is something to applaud.

Bono can be an ass sometimes, though.

Yeah, U2 doesn't get much love around here, but they have been and will always be one of my very favorite bands.

The Joshua Tree, War and Pop are masterpieces in my mind.

If you've heard The Saints Are Coming w/ Green Day, that's a nice taste of it.

2001 Super Bowl Halftime, my phone rings. Actual convo:
Mom: KATIE! Can you believe they are winning?! WOOO!
Me: i know, right holy shit!
Mom: By the way, I like this band.
Me: Yah, Bono is THE MAN!
Mom: You know, there was a band in the 80s called U2 that I really liked. Do these guys do their covers and took over their name or something?
    Me: Ummmm.
    Mom: What?
Me: It's the same band, mom.
Mom: Oh. REALLY!? They look older.
Me: Yeah, by how much, about 15 years?
    Mom: Yeah, actually.
    Me: Think about it.
    (pause)
Mom: They rock, let's see them live!

I was telling my brother that I thought the Joshua Tree might be the greatest album ever.

I think it has the best album opener of all time.

And plus, I think it has like 6 of my top 10 U2 songs.

i like U2, im a very casual fan, but there's no way in hell joshua tree is even in the top 10 mainstream albums of all time.

it is fantastic, however. U2 fans, like DMB fans, live in their own little world it seems. U2 and bono are the greatest thing since sliced bread and can do no wrong

edit: they make good music but none of the musicians in the band are anything special and sometimes bono's lyrics are cheesy and non-sensical.

Oh, I agree, I think The Joshua Tree is the best album of all time. It's always on every single "Top 50 albums" lists or whatever...it's so consistent.

    I just love it

Your post kinda went downhill there.

You're a "very casual U2 fan" yet you say you "like" them? But you tell us TJT is "fantastic, however"? Only it "isn't even in the top 10 mainstream albums of all-time"? (The Joshua Tree has sold over 20 million copies worldwide BTW.)

I don't even know what you mean by "the musicians in the band are anything special." They have an extremely distinct sound that has influenced many groups. Some of their songs are considered modern classics right up there with The Beatles. Even DMB doesn't have that clout. And as for Bono's "cheesy and non-sensical (sic)" lyrics. They fit the music most times. And Bono isn't the sole lyricist in the band. But I bet you were thinking (how original) of Vertigo, which is intentionally supposed to be a fluff rock song.

So, why not instead of being filled with negativity, you instead listen to more U2 and become a bigger fan?

Or you can continue to "live in your own little world".

^ this is what i mean by "your own little world".

the joshua tree is fantastic. its a great record but i still wouldnt call it one of the best records of all time. its my opinion and i cant make it any simpler than that. i am also not one of those people who think record sales mean shit, so that argument is lost on me. U2 sold 20 million copies? so has celine dion. it doesnt mean shit.

what i mean is that none of them are particularly good at their instruments IN MY OPINION. yes, they do have a very distinct sound, but so does OAR. that doesnt mean they are very talented at their instruments. dont take it so personal.

and yeah, i was totally thinking of vertigo ..believe it or not, i really dont like some of the lyrics on the joshua tree. the way he delivers them, however, is their strong point. i have never, ever ever heard anyone that was not a fanatical U2 fan ever compare them to the beatles. maybe in fantasty u2 land they are...
